Sweet. Let the constant barrage of self-referencing posts begin. Meh. Blah. Ick.

Cork1 is not a member of Bone Appetit, therefore he is not referncing himself.

I am new to this homegrown festival as well as Duluth's music scene and want to go to some of these(Especially Charlie Parr). The problem being I won't know anyone at these shows and my circle of friends usually don't go to these, what is a fan to do.

go... and make new friends?

If you don't like the constant barrage of self-referencing posts why in the hell would you bother to read them, let alone post? I swear, way too many people here are self flagellating, obsessive scab pickers.
Next band sucks!

I've gone solo to many shows (especially shows of the Charlie Parr genre, where you can just sit at the bar at the Brewhouse and enjoy the music), and I think a lot of other people do, too. It's kind of weird at first, like going to the movies alone, but if you really want to see the band it's not bad at all.
Maybe you talk to someone, maybe you don't. It works either way.

the next post sucks!

Already getting pumped. Just wish I had a band this year... Anyone want a washtub bassist/guitarist (not too good)/drummer/turntablist for a band??? ;)

Homegrown is a great time for 100+ bands to play once a year and pretend like Duluth has a viable music scene.
The next week sucks when it is back to the handful of bands that play up here and no people at the shows.. Why not do things like Homegrown more often?
Posted by: Pop | February 5, 2008 05:12 PM
Duluth/Superior does have a viable music scene (IMO).
Why don't things like homegrown happen more often? From the people that I know who work to make homegrown happen, it takes A s-ton of work, something that they can only afford to do once a year (time & stress-wise)
I am sure everyone wants to see events like homegrown happen on a fairly regular basis, but how many people have the time between work/school/family/whatever to organize it and make it happen?

wrong answer, the pathetic lack of mid-size venues is the reason the scene isn't nearly as vibrant as it should be. let's see, can we get a gig at luce (good luck) or the DECC? hmmm...

i'd love to be in a band. that would however require actually being able to play an instrument. and probably sing.
which i can't.
I can bang on things but...anybody can do that.

I prefer to go to Homegrown solo. I've tried going with other people and, for me, it doesn't work. Because of my work schedule, etc., I don't get to too many shows throughout the year, so Homegrown is my chance to catch up. I have a very specific list of bands/performers that I want to see and unless you're willing to run (or trolley) around like a crazy person all night, you're probably not going to have a lot of fun. I enjoy running into people I know and meeting new people, sharing my flask and moving on. So, if you have to go stag, don't worry, you're not alone. And if you run into me, I'll be glad to share my whiskey, it usually helps.

zra, you should talk to Lundgren about joining the choir.

Nthing the no-big-deal-ness of going alone. i don't think i've ever gone *with* someone.
course, i always used to go to stuff alone, because i worked til 11pm. you get to know new people that way.

I'll lend further support to the "go to shows solo" camp -- especially at Homegrown.
Most of the people I know in Duluth came out of going to see shows and running into the same people. That and Shaky Ray after-parties. A guaranteed way to make friends is offering to help load-in/-out.

Okay, I am inspired. I will be the one wearing my pdd shirt at Charlie Parrs show, that or my starfire screenprinting shirt. I bought both one day last fall and love them both. Hope to see some of you there.

we are always looking for volunteers to help out at homegrown too. info will be made available soon.

edge...I'd love to...but again: i can't sing.
really.
besides, I'm not certain that I'm cool enough to join the LSCC.
No wait, I'm certain that I'm not cool enough to join the LSCC.
Posted by: zra | February 7, 2008 06:57 AM
I have a volunteer for the LSCC: Hazel! She loves making noise and banging on things! Do you accept almost-two year olds?
Oh, wait, Zra has already volunteered... that's enough almost-two year olds for one choir! ;-) (Just kidding, honey!)
Posted by: tamara | February 7, 2008 07:16 AM
allrighty, but I think not being able to sing is almost a prerequisite for being in the the choir. There are only two rules... Once you start you don't stop and 2. Cacophony forever1
