AM C&W

bare.jpg

I've been on an old AM country kick lately.

When I was a kid, my folks listened almost exclusively to WBAP 820...an AM country radio station out of Dallas that could be heard as far south as Houston on a good night and Topeka KS if you were lucky. I can remember cross-Texas and Arkansas road trips starting at four in the morning...bleary eyed, early morning stares, wanting nothing more than to just go. back. to. sleep....

Midnights on the road back home, pulling through Rockwall and its roads that are rougher than any other in the world...the monotone tinny sound of AM radio...

For us it was KFAB in Omaha. That was the jingle ... "K-F-A-B ..... in O...ma...haaaaa"

They would broadcast the Nebr. Cornhuskers games. Lyle Bremser was the announcer, and his famous line was "Holy man, woman and child!!!"

The big sponsor was the Bohemian Cafe in South Omaha. They had their own fabulous jingle that will never, ever leave my head:
Dumplings and kraut today
At the Bohemian cafe
(something something)
Plenty of parking,
See you at lunch, OK?
Ohhhh kaaayy!!!

Late at night, I remember falling asleep in the back seat of the car, leaving my grandma's house late at night, and the easy-listening, loungy, late-night sounds of the 70's coming through the craptacular AM radio spectrum. Good stuff.

How 'bout you, Mr. Syring?

There used to be a C&W AM station that came out of one of the reservations around here. I don't remember the channel or where it was from, only that you could only tune it in if you tried really hard and it was about 1am on a Tuesday.

Anyone remember that? It wasn't that long ago -- maybe eight or nine years ago. Does it still exist?

Brian, my sister and I, 30 years later, will say "that's a total KFAB song" whenever a non-AOR 70s AM song comes on. They had a very particular playlist.

WOJB has that awesome C&W call-in show, Honky Tonk, on Saturday nights. Excellent stuff.

Is there a local station that plays decent old-timey C&W?

Sometimes AM1230 plays old-time country but mostly they play Lawrence Welk-type oldies and other hits from the 1950s, 1940s and earlier. Sometimes you'll get a early-60s or 70s mellow hit but they consider that pretty cutting edge. When they're feeling really daring, they play "Kokomo."

On Sunday mornings, they have the Elvis/Johnny Cash Gospel Hour.

If you don't mind really soothing music and non-irritating commercials, it's not a bad station to listen to. It's hard to get it to tune in, though.

I always get a little chill when I heard that song I'm 500 miles from home. Didn't know who sang it till I just did a google search of Bobby Bare. That kind of music really takes me back. I never saw a television till I was 9 years old so the family listened to the radio...lots of the old country western.

My favorite old country tune is "lovesick blues". A 1920's showtune before Hank Sr. played it in the 40's.

My dad was big on Bobby Bare, Ray Price and Charley Pride.

I think Price's Crazy Arms sticks hard in my mind when I think about dozing off in the backseat of my folks' Granada at stupidoclock in the morning outside Weatherford or Mineral Wells on the way to Odessa.

I did some googling and found out that my beloved station went uberconservative talk quite a while ago...which kinda saddens me in a big way...AM country seems to be disappearing all over in favor of Big Box Evangelical proselytizing and Druggie Limbug wannabe necon mouthbreathers.

Vicarious: If you listen to WOJB, 88.9 FM (WOJB.org), on Saturday nights starting at 8 p.m., you'll get the Honky Tonk show. They have an hour or so of a featured singer, and then they take requests from 9 p.m. to midnight. It's some of the best radio you'll ever hear -- old country, old western, and then the best cheesy 70s stuff. Honky Tonk and a six pack and you're set for the night.
