Chasing after Wind
So I saw the headline on my blog reader from the DNT - Police chase winds through Lakewalk, Canal Park - and it really caught my attention. I eagerly read through the article wondering how and why it was that the police were chasing after winds. You know, as in "I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind." (Eccl. 1:14) I mean, how deeply existential, spiritual, and profound. Or was this some strange meteorological phenomenon with criminal intent? And then, after reading the article twice, I figured it out.
I chalk it up to reading the DNT online at two in the morning.

I honestly thought the DNT was giving the same kind of story. I have the DNT as an RSS Feed, so "Police Chase Winds" is all I saw. I bet they knew what they were doing with their homonym play! ;)

I'm guessing that story was posted without anyone noticing the possible misunderstanding. It wouldn't be usual to have a play on words in the headline of a news story where lives were at risk.
BTW, if you look at the story now and none of this makes sense, it's because the headline doesn't say "police chase winds" anymore.

So the article states that one eye-witness noticed that there were several parking meters down in the Endion Station parking lot. Does this mean that there is "free" parking spaces in canal park again?

I looked in the physical paper today and saw that the header was changed.
I doubt the double meaning was intentional as it really wasn't a pun and, like Beverly said, I doubt they'd be so flippant about something like this.

Farglebargle, I was going to say exactly the same thing.
Maybe it's because I live with an eight-year-old boy, but that headline brought to mind more gassy connotations.

lol i was reading the news this morning and thought the same thing - i almost posted it here, too. I thought it was going to be something about some silly mission they put the police on in canal park - like looking for something that they never found so they were just "chasing wind" oh funny. I smiled when I opened the story and realized my error.

Interestingly enough, an acquaintance of mine was walking on the Lakewalk when this happened. He was walking towards the direction the car was coming from and there was a lady with her I-Pod on walking the opposite direction. She couldn't hear the sirens and didn't understand his gestures. He pulled her off the Lakewalk just before she would have gotten hit by the dude. Crazy! Gauntlet!
