Who's got wood for sheep?
I had a great time the other night playing Catan with my kids and some friends. My eight year old, Simon, uttered one of my favorite Simonisms to date:
"I'm not having one of my better games. I almost never have one of my better games."
It was a lovely Charlie Brownesque moment. Truth be told, he almost won it. I love my geeky kids.

All hail the (mutter) Lord of Catan!
1) Check out how all the settlements and cities in the picture are all f'd up sideways.
2) And what's up with the 11, 10, 9? The whole board's f'd up--11 next to 12, 3 next to 4? What kind of bastardized version are they playing?

I have a feeling it was set up by someone who doesn't know how to play the game.

Although, the ports look right, and that's what people usually screw up. Hmmm.... A mystery wrapped in an enigma...

Actually the 11 does go next to the 12 on the normal set up, Adam. That looks okay.

Two settlements on an 8 clay, a settlement on a 6 wood, a clay port, and longest road? Blue's gonna win. Easy.

I love your geeky kids too.

Ironic1, do your kids play kid's Catan or the reg. version? I've been looking at getting kid's catan for LP (he's six).

They play the regular version and have for a couple of years. My brother and his kids, who are younger than my 8 and *gasp* 11 year-old-as-of-tomorrow, play the regular catan and seem to really enjoy it and grasp it. But I have never played the Kid's Catan version so I don't know... could be fun in its own right. I know they have both at Robin Goodfellow. (Russ, you can tip me for the plug later.)

Another GREAT game that has a kids version is Fluxx. Seriously - Fluxx is one of my favorite games - I can see kids really liking it. Collector's Connection has a few copies of Fluxx and Family Fluxx. (Tim, you can tip me for the plug later.)

My kids and I love Fluxx too. We like especially that we can make our own cards with the expansion pack, which are available at Robin Goodfellow as well. (Russ, you can pay for lunch.)

That's cool that you have gamer kids. I'm slightly jealous (even though I never actually want to have kids). I wonder if I can teach my cats to game? Freya did manage to roll a nat-20 once (but I think she was just attracted to the shiny 20-sider).

I'd only want kids so I could force them to be gamemaster.

I'm beginning to think there's enough game geeks on PDD to have some type of PDD card/board game night. Anyone else, uh, "game"?

I played Settlers of Catan for the first time this weekend, and now I'm hooked!

Mwahahaha!
You can play on line for free at catan.jsettlers.org. I play on the ladder server which is a competitive server, but very fun. If you want to play competitively you need to register at myleague.com/soc. I'm known there as, what else, Ironic1.
