I've been told to contact these fine people for possible recruits. I'm interested in some performance pieces as well.

As what box said, whatcha got in mind? Didn't the city audition street performers a couple of years ago, giving permits to those they thought were worthy?

I think the city offered up some busking permits for a small fee a couple of years ago. Not sure if they actually "auditioned" or what...see which acts were tourism-appropriate, perhaps. Probably granted permits to any performer who did "Jesus Christ Superstar" medleys. Anyway, I Say More!!! I think the more street theater performances the better. I do it for the play of it and don't believe a city permit should stop a group of ragtag artists from acting up, so to speak. I've got some giant puppetry experience...

As part of the Harbor City International School's irst graduating class, I can safely say you'll never find a more creative, enthusiastic, and passionate group of teenage freaks. I mean that in a great way since I love my high school. Unfortuantly, I can't give you any names in particular cause I'm not sure what you're looking for and at what talent level, but I'm sure Baci could help you out.

I'd contact Brian Matuszak at Renegade Comedy Theater. He could probably help.

I actually got a buskering license a couple years ago. It really only applied to Canal Park. I believe you can busker anywhere else for free. It cost me $25, and I never made it back. I thought it was cool, but the touristas just stared. They apparently aren't the tipping type. I think what you need are 2 or 3 performers and one person that rounds people up and then makes them pay money.
I am interested, but you make it sound so vague.
Will you pay people?
Will you write music?
Will you play music?
Do you want to paint yourself like the satue of liberty and just stand there all day in that greenish silvery paint?

Contact the children's museum. They probably have a list or contact info for this kind of thing.

GREAT ideas, great ideas....Here is a little more back ground on why I am looking for street performers. There are some events in the Downtown this summer, specifically on Superior Street, One being Rock the Block a new Summer concert Series, and the other being the oh so fabulous but traditional Sidewalk Days. I have the dubias honor of organizing these events and am always, always, always looking for talent that is a bit funky and definitely unique.
You do not have to take out a permit.. I have it covered. And in the most extraordinary cases I can pay a little bit. Living Statues are sweet, I loved them when I was in Paris. Basically anything you think people would find entertaining I will give a shot.

Laura,
IMHO, all sidewalk days needs is the Um-Pah band that's been there for years. Downtown teems with people for Sidewalk Days anyway, and I doubt that you would be able to make THAT many more people to come to make it worth your while.
As for buskers in general, I think that you will have a bit of a hard time finding any as the busking season is short, and as the above post indicated, patrons tend to be anything but.
HOWEVER, for busking issues in general, I was always impressed with the wyas that busking was handled in places such as Seattle and Winnipeg. Both those cities (among others) has designated "Busk Stops," where only a certain number of liscenced buskers can perform. It makes the whole process more organized and the buskers more legitimacy.
IMHO.

Just don't have any of them homosexual individuals out there.
They give our city a bad name. What with their hand holding and intelligence and all.
Gives me the willies.

In the midwest, busking is considered panhandling. I hate to break it to you, but it's true.
