Has anyone been to the Split Rock Lighthouse event? Is it good for kids? I sorely tempted to yank them from school this afternoon and go check it out.

I was there two years ago. There was a documentary video, they had a short ceremony, they rang the bell for each of those lost, and they turned on the light and let small groups inside to see it. I think kids 9 or 10 or older would be able to appreciate the events. Younger... it would depend on the kid.

What stood out about the night I was there was that there was a touch of fog, so that when the light was turned on the beam was really visible as it cut out above the vast, dark waters. A good opportunity to sit, and watch, and think.

sailors belong on ships.
ships belong at sea.
land is nothing more than a hazard to navigation.

godspeed.

As the day ends, another year passes this sad anniversary. One day I will journey to the north to celebrate this day. But tonight I sit in Ohio, sip a shot and drink a beer and pay tribute to the sons, fathers and brothers that rest in Lake Superior. Godspeed to each of them. Amen.
