Let Us Talk of Happy Things

Dansia2.jpg

So, my special ladyfriend and I are getting married in fair Duluth this summer. We are both locals at heart, but have been living in the Pacific Northwest for the better part of two years. This makes for bad location scouting. And so, I put this before you, dear readers: Where can our friends and family make merry and dance the night away? (We're not looking into hotel ballrooms and the like). We're hoping to get hitched on the point and would like to find an atypical setting for the drinking and getting weird. Have any of you ever done the Park Point Beach House thing? Is there a really cool abandoned airplane hanger on the outskirts of town I'm unaware of? Any of you have a sturdy barn you or your animals won't be using in early August? Any guidance will be appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I've rented the lafayette community club beach house for special events before..it's awesome and has a kitchen.

The lounge at the curling club is available to rent for special events.

The only problem with Lafayette is that you have to be cleaned up and out of there by 10pm, otherwise it is pretty great.

There are some Town Halls that might be more open to a late night thing. Of course I can't think of the names right now.

The Beach house on the point is pretty cool as well, but there to you have to be cleaned up and out pretty early. I thought it was midnight, might be 11. If you want booze, you need someone manning the keg at all times, and need a rent-a-cop on scene all night. Being able to run out at any point in the night and jump in the lake has its perks though.

Enger Tower is pretty spectacular but everybody goes there. Jay Cooke has a pretty nice picnic shelter as does Gooseberry Falls. Or at the top of Palisade Head. All sorts of neat places around here... as far as the party goes, Carmody Irish Pub!

My wife and I got hitched at the rose garden and did the reception at the Depot. It was a great space for 150 people. The space itself is pretty expensive to rent($700 or so) but you save by being able to decide your own caterer, liquor options (small insurance policy required) and music options. Many of the places we looked at, like the chalet atop spirit were cheap to rent but very expensive and limited options to provide catering and the like.
Congrats and good luck!

When considering outdoor weddings let me be a voice of experience here. Even though outdoor weddings on the lakeshore sound idyllic and lovely, as they are visually, even on a very nice day the lake can be very loud. Consider a spot with a lakeview but is actually away from the lake itself.

And, of course, always have an indoor backup to any outdoor wedding. I always chuckle at brides who tell me "it isn't going to rain on my wedding day." Sure, and I bet your shit smells like roses, sweetie.

You have to request a quote from the Vista boats, so I imagine it's expensive.
I got married at Enger Tower, but we weren't planning to stay out all night. I think the park closes at 10. I don't think it's as common to get married there as tamara said, but I could be wrong. We had the ceremony in the gazebo that overlooks the whole city. It was nice.

The Buffalo House has a large pole-barn type building with a bar next to the main restaurant that you can rent out. There's also (fairly expensive) camping available, if you're into that. It is a bit of a drive from Park Point.

One of my college roommates had her ceremony/reception on one of the Vista boats--everyone seemed to enjoy that, and the non-locals especially enjoyed being on the lake and watching the scenery go by. Not sure about price, but I know my roommate didn't have a lot to spend so it probably wasn't too outrageous...

I had my wedding at the Depot, with the train yards & children's museum included.

Rice Lake Town Hall. Reasonable and out of the city limits. Had a reception there two years ago and no limits!

Emerson gym, for that unique punk rock/DIY wedding theme.
It's cheap, and Oddio will DJ for beer.

Vista Cruise's probably ~$3,000+

Norway Hall above Robin Goodfellow.

I threw a 40th bday party for my husband at the Lafayette Sq community center on park point. I had to hire a cop and also we had to clean the place, I think it was by midnight, could have been 10 pm. But it was such a GREAT location, next to the beach! I think I went to a wedding out in Clover Valley, at a town hall there, once, it was pretty cool. And the Depot is a great place, I've been to parties there.

Well, the me be the first (after all these comments?) to say CONGRATULATIONS!

Wherever it is, there better be dogs and fire.

Thanks, y'all. I think I'll just build some elaborate structure World's Fair style, then tear it down right after the reception.
And, yes...there will be fire. Lots of fire. Dogs will have their own catering.

i love the picture, and miss you cats horribly. i vote for seagull island: birds, birds, and more birds.

Best wedding place in the world

Sacred Heart Music Center, hands down.

Norway Hall can't have liquor, just as an FYI.

The landlord at Norway Hall recently removed the building's fire escape, so they can't have more than about 30 people in the room for the time being.

hey, this is a-fore-mentioned special lady friend here.
i'm impressed mayday beat me to the punch. i actually finally joined PDD weeks ago expressly for this purpose. he's one swell dude.
anyway, since many of you posters will be invited to the ceremony, please keep in mind that your advice correlates directly to the awesomeness of the party you will attend.
our priorities are as follows: booze, good food, fire, loud music(provided by local bands? anyone?), weirdness, room for 150 old christian scandanavians, dogs, bubble machines, places to pee.
i've been thinking sacred heart and the depot, but really would prefer a barn or airplane hangar scenario. plus, having to finish being awesome at ten p.m. sort of stinks. i'd actually really love a gigantic circus tent with elephants and pony rides and trapeze artists, but we've only got a year to plan!

Congrats on the engagement!!! If you have to get married outside, PLEASE have a back up plan incase Duluth's weather gods have a sense of humor that day, trust me they are bastards that way.

We got married at Amnicon Falls and then receptioned/crashed at the St. Croix Inn in Solon Springs. They have a big hall with a wall of windows overlooking the lake. Bar open to 2:30am and then they let us keep drinking from the keg all night. We had a huge fire, made a lot of noise and had no problems. Super cheap and fun!

Sacred Heart. Use CANDLES. The space is HUGE and wonderful. The sound is perfect. There are tunnels.

you fags should get married in fagland with all the other fags.

If i remember correctly, Sacred Heart doesn't allow booze inside. Thats the way it was 5 years ago or so, so don't quote me on it.

Wrong Rod on booze at SHMC wrong Rod
booze good

I just know when our band recorded there we had to drink beer in the courtyard, none was allowed inside. I guess the rules have changed.

I'm guessing that wasn't the only "rule" exclusive to your band.

Now your taking shots at us? I was just trying to be helpful. Guess ill stay out of it.

Hotrod, that was a joke - and really more of a compliment. Would you really want to be in a rock band that's allowed to drink in church? The Bone rules!

Fair Enough. Sorry, Im the ultimate crabass today, I work outside year round and this snow isnt helping my mood.... I wish i never would have gotten into Stucco...

"stucco" as in a fine plaster for coating wall surfaces, or is stucco some sort of institution? (again, don;t live there, I should probably know this)

Stucco as in plastering. I actually bought a house in Lindstrom, MN although i mainly work in the cities.

What about renting an airplane hanger on Park Point? Sacred Heart probably isn't the best for a reception.

i thought about renting a hanger down there, but it seems like it might be a liability nightmare. plus, bonfires on the runway might seem, to some, in bad taste.

The Aquarium was suprisingly inexpensive to rent, although they require their own in-house catering. You can have the ceremony on the patio on the side right by the harbor, and stay past midnight. 150 old Christian Scandinavians fit just fine here.

What the fuck? Aren't you from here? I think you should me more concerned about finding a home for those two field mice on either side of your face, you fucking poseur.
