Great Northern Festival of Words 4/22
Not to compete with any plans you may have for Geek Prom, Earth Day, or the Free Democracy Summit, but...
Lake Superior Writers is holding a free book fair at the Depot on Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Lots of authors and publishers, public readings, free writing/publishing workshops and the official appointment of Duluth's (and Minnesota's) first Poet Laureate (in the noon hour with some cake).
It's at the Depot, and close to a lot of other events (except, perhaps, Geek Prom).
Then to cap off the evening, Denise Sweet, Wisconsin's Poet Laureate, will be reading at Somer's Lounge in St. Scholastica. Also free.

Both Poet Laureate's gave great readings. Some good literary discusstions. PDD was mentioned as X-Communication's Publishing is planning a book of historic Duluth postcards.

As a poetry lover from the Cities, I gotsta know...
Who was named Duluth/MN Poet Laureate?

Barton Sutter is the man beneath the laurel wreath. A very kind man and strong writer. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he'll do in the next two years.

jmcc,
I and a friend have just gone live with a showcase for regional creative writing in a unique format. Can you recommend some Duluth/Superior you would consider "must haves" for such a showcase?
Oh, and yeah, I did invite Mr. Sutter.

Ellie Shoenfeld, Connie Wanek, Louis Jenkins, Deb Cooper, Cal Benson, and Don Dass would be among the poets I would suggest for showcasing.
What's the unique format? Is there any aesthetic you're looking for in particular?
Unfortunately I don't have a lock on younger poets. The Norshor seemed to be the place and my second time there for poetry was one of the last shows of any sort before it was shut down. Not long enough to make new poetry friends. If you're looking for a younger, northern Bukowski- look up John Holden, I really liked his stuff and his was one of the names of the better poets that stuck with me.

jmcc,
Thanks for the info. The unique format is that opposed to a monthly (or more infrequent) "issue" of our showcase, it changes weekly. We (admin) posts a stimulus (a pic, a song, a short film, etc.) and the growing cadre of invited writers have one week to post something creative in response to it.
Please check out the site: www.northography.com, and email me at [email protected]. I would like to talk with you further about it.
P.S. I have been trying like heck to find an email address for Holden, whom I have already heard much praise.
