Snuggie Redux...

seems somebody's onto something.

seems somebody's onto something.

Starting February 18th I will be hosting a local music show on KUMD called simply enough "The Local." It will air on Wednesdays from 5-6pm and I will be playing local and regional music as well as a weekly music calendar and interviews. There may also be live performances but I have to get my feet wet first.
In order to make this the best show possible I need your help. KUMD has a pretty good collection of local music but it is far from complete so if you are in a band and have not sent your discography to the station now is the time to do it. Simply send it to the station at the address below or if you see me out and about I will gladly get it there for you.
I am excited to finally be on the air legally and I hope you all give the show a listen. Thanks.

...Takk for Maten - the Scandinavian cafe downtown on Lake Avenue - has suffered a bit of a setback but WILL REOPEN!
A steam pipe malfunctioned, flooded the store with like 200-percent humidity air, and did stuff like warping the floors and melting all the chocolate.
They're cleaning things up and will be closed a few weeks. There already was some ongoing renovation work on the front of the building - so it may kind of look like the place is gone - but they're planning on coming back better than ever.
If you hadn't yet heard about Takk for Maten, here's a link to an earlier PDD post
At least according to this list they are. Found on this website, this is a list of all the banks in the U.S. and their corresponding Texas ratios. What's a Texas ratio?
"Developed by Gerard Cassidy, the Texas ratio is a measure of a bank's credit troubles. Basically, the higher the ratio, the worse the situation is for that particular bank. Banks with a ratio of 100 and higher are in very serious danger of collapse, and banks with a ratio of 50 or higher are vulnerable."

You're invited to a one vigil in support of equal rights and same-sex marriage. The vigil will be held this Saturday, November 15 from 1 to 2pm. It'll take place at the MN Power Plaza, which is located at Lake Ave. & Superior St. in downtown Duluth.
This event is being held in solidarity with the national call for action for Nov. 15 protests against California's Prop 8 amendment. Given that Wisconsin recently also passed a state constitutional amendment against same-sex marriage, and that there is still lingering talk of a such an effort in MN, we've got plenty of local reasons to come out and stand for equality!
I'll bring some extra signs, but feel free to make and bring your own. And be sure to bring your friends!
-For those of you on facebook.com, you can view the page that has been set up for this event there at this address:

Check out the first election stories on the Duluth Community News Web site. We'll be posting election updates, photos and video over the next two days.
UMD Journalism students are covering the election Duluth Community News-style -- away from the desk and out on the streets.
This will be a group effort. John Hatcher's Reporting and Writing II class will head out into the community and get people talking. The Advanced Editing students will keep close contact with the reporters up until their deadlines. Later, we'll all meet up in the journalism classroom to set up a working newsroom - reporters finishing their stories, editors touching them up for posting. We're inviting all student reporters who are interested to participate.
Anyway, the Duluth Community News is an online publication run by students at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Our news-gathering method is on-foot and out in the community. We started this semester by dividing Duluth into neighborhoods and sending teams of reporters out to get to know the issues affecting each part of the community.
On Election Night, we want to have fun. Stop by our online newspaper and leave feedback. We're all new at this, and we would love to hear what you think.

I am feeling the need to watch the election results surrounded my food and booze, preferably supplied by someone else (guess it's my socialist background). Where are people going on election night?
Filmmaker George Desort will premiere his movie, Fortunate Wilderness at the Marshall Performing Arts Center (UMD) on Nov. 6 at 7 :00 pm (The film premiere is free!). George is a thoughtful artist and delivers a beautiful look at the wolf-moose research of Isle Royale. The human relationship with the natural world is at the heart of the movie.
The movie should provide an added draw to Duluthians, as the band Low has contributed original music to support the images. George has shared that he feels a connection between Low's music and his own work.
Watch for posters advertising other great events scheduled for Nov 5-7. Duluth will be celebrating the 50 years of wolf moose research in a way that honors special wild places.

Shane McQuillan of Eau Claire, Wisconsin will hold up a sign reading "I was stupid" instead of facing jail time for ramming his car into the gate of a waste treatment plant.
In related news, George Bush has not yet admitted stupidity nor is he facing jail time.

The good news: They call us an "artsy shipping city," which is kind of nice.
The bad news: Well, you know the bad news.
"In Duluth, for instance, a $3 million investment the city made last summer through Merrill Lynch, which was sold to Bank of America last month, was liquidated and came back last week $2.25 million short — a devastating setback for a city."

Experience in human service field desired but not required. Valid driver's license and ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds preferred. Paid training, competitive wage and benefits. I tried to get an Obama yard sign at the office on Superior Street and was told that they haven't had any since the convention I signed up to be called when they come in). I tried on line and found that they can be purchased for $8 but that it costs $8.77 for shipping. Does anybody have an idea where I can get an Obama sign in Duluth? The McCain signs are popping up like mushrooms and it would be nice to counteract this.

the carlton county fair starts tomorrow, thursday the 14th. the first day's events include the draft horse pull at 6pm. horseracing starts at 1:30 on saturday and sunday. this fair (which is in barnum) is much prettier and more laid back than either the head of the lakes or south st. louis county (proctor) fairs. i highly recommend it.

What do you guys think? Looks great doesn't it? No mowing that pesky green grass for me! Now that a majority of my "representatives" on the city council have exhibited their continued support of the HOMEOWNERS of Duluth, I can go forward with my plans to maximize profits on my investment...er...I mean remodel my home...I've got new cutsie signs on the front door, "investment, sweet investment" and "there's no place like investment". I've asked Kathyrn Martin and Jeff Anderson to help me with decorating and design ideas for investment impoverishment ..er...improvement projects like how to make a basement into an additional rental unit without the expense (and enforcement) of egress windows. I'm REALLY hoping to upgrade my Endion neighborhood property with some light industrial manufacturing in my garage. The only thing bumming me out is the fact that I know the city will soon be hiring more people and beefing up the inspections staff.

POOR PEOPLE'S ECONOMIC HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN
THE MARCH FOR OUR LIVES
On August 1st the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign will launch "Operation March For Our Lives." Operation March for Our Lives will be a statewide march/bus tour through Minnesota to collect economic human rights violations documentation. The portrait of poverty that this documentation paints will be presented at the Minnesota Truth Commission.
Human Rights Monitors will collect economic human rights documentation. We're encouraging Minnesotans to watch our website and to visit us along our march and to bring us your stories of trying to pay for healthcare, losing your home to foreclosure, high unemployment on your reservation or how you didn't have enough food to feed your children this month.
Operation March For our Lives will also serve as a vehicle to place representatives of Minnesota's various branches of government & opinion shapers on notice about their obligations under human rights treaties.
The Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign is building a movement that unites the poor across color lines. Poverty afflicts Americans of all colors. Daily more and more of us are downsized and impoverished. We share a common interest in uniting against the prevailing conditions and around our vision of a society where we all have the right to health care, housing, living wage jobs, and access to quality primary, secondary, and higher education.
For more information about the campaign see www.economichumanrights.org

This event starts earlier than all the others so do stop by and have a beverage won't you?

I kick off the challenge with the Finland national anthem.

Stan Winston, dead from cancer at age 62.
Stan was THE man when it came to making creepy movie creatures in many of my favorite movies.
You've probably seen his work in: The Thing, Terminator, Jurassic Park, Aliens, Predator, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, A.I., Interview with a Vampire, The Island of Dr. Moreau, Constantine, Iron Man, & more.
He's been a legend in the creature/horror/effects worlds since the 70's, and he will be greatly missed.
The past few months I've been trying, really trying, to buy products made in the U.S. I've even gone to several stores in search of American-made products, when I could have just bought a foreign-made item at my first stop (which raises a host of issues about gasoline consumption, but we'll save that for another post).
Sadly, more than a few times I've been unable to locate a U.S.-made item, even after visiting two or three stores. So I find myself playing international diplomat, making judgment calls about which nation's product I'm going to buy.

Today, for your Geek Culture Update, I'm presenting something that has not yet received the Geek King Seal of Approval but it's too important to ignore. Tomorrow Dungeons & Dragons 4.0 launches. I'm ambivalent. I want it to be a great edition. I want it to be the D&D of my dreams, but I have grave doubts.
I've been playing D&D since 1978 and I have gone through every iteration of the system. I love the scope it provided for my imagination and the opportunity it gave me to create and tell stories with my friends. The best things that happened with D&D, or any RPG for that matter, had nothing to do with the system itself, but with the stories we got to tell together. While I enjoy gaming in virtual worlds like World of Warcraft, nothing compares to actual role playing. (And, believe me, there is precious little role playing that goes on in World of Warcraft even on so called "role playing" servers.)
Yeah, I'm going to be one of those suckers plopping down bucks for a new edition. But it's going to be the same old gaming buddies that I game with. And the stories will continue just like before.
So, let me know then if you think 4.0 deserves the Geek King Seal of Approval or not. As always, please feel free to send me nominees for the Geek King Seal of Approval. This concludes this royal announcement.

Like some of you (especially transplants from a warm environment), I went through the "why the fing is there still snow" depression a couple months ago. One of the things that got me through was watching the first few seasons of The X-Files. Then The X-Files movie brought me through a bad scenario: "Trust No One."

Apparently because of my my self absorption and trust of no one, I completely was unaware that a new X-Files movie was not only filmed, but will be in theaters this summer.

Momma, Poppa and babies are doing great. Way to go Brandy, although I will kind of miss that huge belly you had.
Friday's 70-degree sunshine (I live up over the hill) got me thinking about all the places around the Northland I'd like to explore this summer. And then it got me thinking if this will finally be the year that gas prices will be a primary reason - instead of lack of time, or other commitments, or being sick, or whatever - that causes me to cut back my plans.
A couple weeks ago, a real head-turner drove by me on the road. It was a smart car, one of those unbelievably little cars I've seen only in movies, like, in "The Bourne Identity" or something. I wished I had my camera.
Then today, there it was again. And I had my camera. (No people were harmed in the taking of this photograph, snapped as I entered the highway on-ramp.)

"Is it the same car?" I wondered. "Of course," I thought, "How could there be more than one in Duluth? Do they sell those in the U.S.? Is it street-legal here? How much do they cost? What's the gas mileage?"
These questions and more are answered on the FAQs page of the smart car website.
(They have been available in the U.S. since January. They are sold in Bloomington, Minn. Street-legal, yes. From $12,000 to $17,000. Gas mileage 40/45. The FAQs also include "How does [it] perform in the snow?" I'm skeptical, but at least if you get stuck, you could push it out of the ditch by yourself.)
A couple weeks ago my daughter told me she would make me a video for Mother's Day. I think she was expecting I would go for something funny but we've been talking a lot lately about her friend from school who is an exchange student from Iraq and will be going home to Baghdad soon. I pitched her my idea and this is what she came up with. Just thought I'd share.
Hey, Happy Birthday, Minnesota.
I know I sometimes bitch about you, especially in what you laughingly call "Spring," but I'm kinda fond of you. Some people have argued that you were born out of oppression and that your birthday isn't something to celebrate, but, hey, who doesn't have a dark past?
I've only been hanging out with you for the last 8 years after meeting you at a party about 16 years ago, but, ya know, from the start I liked you. You're kinda laid back and easy-going and you don't take yourself too seriously. That's cool.
And, not to be shallow, but you are absolutely beautiful. You've really taken care of yourself over the last 150 years and it shows, not like some states I could mention.
Anyway, I don't always say it, but you're alright in my book. Happy Birthday.

I'm pretty sure this will be a knockout good time, from beginning to end;
assuming the neighbors don't revolt... but even then...

I heard about this this morning on MPR and could hardly believe it. This past January Jeffrey Ely hit a dog near Cloquet and kills it instantly. Now he is suing the owners for $1100 to cover damage to car and lost work time. The family is countersuing for $2400.
Um, ya know, crap like this happens, folks. Who's to blame? The driver, probably not. The family? Unlikely. The dog? Hardly. It seems to me when a pet is hit by a car either everyone is to blame or no one is to blame, unless there are extenuating circumstances, which I don't see here.

I am particularly excited about the Farmer's Market this year since I will be living only 2 blocks away. The Farmer's Market opens this Saturday—although the good stuff doesn't really start appearing until June, when the yummy foods start growing and being harvested.
The farmers market, on the corner of Third Street and 14th Avenue East, opens at 7 a.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. I believe it's open until Noon. Here is a handy dandy map (or for most people it's just easier to say it's one block downhill from Burrito Union). Also the DNT posted a nice "In Season" guide here

This is a reminder to set your clocks ahead an hour tonight.
This is also a wake up call that daylight savings time actually wastes energy instead of conserving it, as we've been led to believe.
In Barb Olson's column this week:
"'We support the vision of a Lakewalk for everyone,' Beacon Pointe Condos resident Judy Gordon tells the Council. 'But we don't consider it appropriate to have a Lakewalk right in front of everyone's patios.'"
(Apparently, the "everyone" she is referring to is "everyone" in Duluth who currently owns a million-dollar condo.)
Also, on page 5 is another blow-open-the-scandal article (actually, a letter) about the Red Plan. Seems Duluth Architect Robert Aho thinks Johnson Controls is trying to pull some shady, "possibly illegal" stuff with regards to bilking taxpayers. Or rather, the school board basically told him that's what they were doing. Read it and weep. Then get pissed and do something about it before it's too late.
The Eco Home built by Women in Construction is hosting another open house this Sunday, March 8th from 12-4 pm. The home was designed to promote sustainable living and energy efficiency through the use of environmentally-friendly materials and products. There is also a lot of other literature about sustainable living and what you can do to reduce energy consumption. Take Superior St. to 52nd Ave East, go up till you get to the dead end, take a right onto Broadwing Drive, take a right onto Snowy Owl Circle, follow to 2809. There will also be an open house for the Coho Cottage built by Women in Construction. The address is 2830 Snowy Owl Circle. To learn more and see pictures visit http://www.womenworking.org
So, I've been an unabashed fan/lover/reader of Dan Savage's Savage Love since way back when his readers used to address him as "Hey Faggot," and he had a day job pulling shots at Cafe Paradisio...
ANYwhooo...back last month for his Valentine week column, he ran a letter concerning sex toys, and the proper etiquette of the proper disposal of such. Within his reply he made a suggestion that any and all old toys could be mailed to a Kandiss Crone, an "investigative" reporter from Jackson MS, who recently staged a raid on an adult book/video/toy store because, apparently Mississippi is one of a few sex-phobic states that has completely outlawed the sale of "three dimensional devices" intended for sexual gratification. The store had been busted a couple of times prior to Ms. Kandiss' story by the JPD, but to her shock and awe, the store had not ceased its immoral retail activity.
Apparently, Ms. Crone went incognito to the adult store, purchased a purple vibe, and then returned later with a camera crew to confront the store's employees. She even went as far as to try to solicit further involvement of the Jackson, MS police department, but they weren't interested. She was rebuffed with a statement from them saying that the citizens of Jackson would prefer the police be involved with rounding up criminals, drug addicts and prostitutes, and that pursuing a criminal investigation on an adult bookstore for selling sex toys wasn't very high on their list.
I wonder whatever became of the purple vibrator.

I don't remember anyone mentioning this. Comments?
I personally thought the use of a Meow Mix commercial was creative.
There is a battle going on the funny side of the street between Brian Matuszak, the Renegade Board, and Teatro Zuccone (the Zeppa Foundation backed new owners of the venue at 222 E. Superior St.). It has to do with the terms of the lease and who gets what, especially when it comes to running the box office for Renegade productions. Brian has stated he's willing to resign over the issue. More can be found in this Duluth News Tribune article.
I am one of the Renegade regulars mentioned in the article who got the letter from Sue and I have to say, from the letter, I'm concerned. I contacted one of the board members to get a different point of view, but she didn't want to comment on it, understandably. So, without the board coming forward and giving their point of view on the lease, I'm apt to take Brian's side of things. Hey, Renegade Board, I'm all ears.
If you are like me and don't watch television much you had no idea to what Starfire was referring. So here's the clip.

There are a lot of events happening tonight, but if you have an interest in journalism, British politics or Gordon Brown, I highly recommend tonight's presentation by Gerard Baker, United States Editor and Assistant Editor at The Times (London). And I'm not just saying this because it's my job to promote Alworth Institute for International Studies events.
I'm really excited about this guy (Gerard Baker). He held an informal discussion with journalism, writing studies and communications students and faculty last evening, and I found him utterly engaging. Baker will speak this evening on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in the Library Fourth Floor Rotunda at 7 p.m. Given Brown's recent decision to nationalize troubled U.K. mortgage lender Northern Rock, Baker, who previously wrote for the Financial Times and worked at the Bank of England , will be able to offer insight into the consequences Brown's decision will have on the current economic crisis in both the U.K. and the U.S.

In less then a year since opening the new expansion will create 287 new jobs bringing the total work force to 537 with pay of $17.14. I find it ironic that we're not a part of that change.

One of my favorite father/son childhood memories is the time we spent together getting my Pinewood Derby car ready for the annual race. For those unfamiliar with the Pinewood Derby Wikipedia can bring you up to speed.
Last week while reading Threadless.com I noticed they were having an adult Pinewood Derby Race called the Threadle Manss and I knew immediately Duluth needed it's own event. So I have done some checking and I found a track for rent. I have a venue in mind and we have a hobby shop that sells cars. My question to the greater PDD community is would you participate? Also since Pinewood Derby is a registered trademark of the Boy Scouts of America we need a good name.
Leave your feedback in the comments and if anyone would be willing to help out a bit with organizing send me an email. I would like to have the first event this spring if at all possible.

Our Corgi is looking to find other Corgis in Duluth for a regular play date at the Duluth Dog Park out near the zoo. We happened to run into a Corgi there once and it was hilarious. They had a lot of fun and it would be great to get even more Corgis.
Perhaps we could one day organize an all Corgi team and enter the John Beargrease?

I Falls is now officially the "Icebox of the Nation," legally edging out Fraser CO for bragging rights and the title...
"In 1988, a meteorology professor at St. Cloud State University submitted an affidavit saying Fraser can’t be the nation’s icebox, “because 11 months out of the year its meat would thaw and its ice cream would melt, while throughout the winter all meat and ice cream would be safe in International Falls.”
Incedentally, this morning's low temp in I Falls: -30 with an expected high of -22...and a wind chill of -47 to -44.
Fraser CO: a balmy high of 35, low of 3.
This Sunday, February 10th the Eco Home is having an open house. It's a home demonstrating solar power, and basically everything you could do to make a home sustainable and eco friendly and energy efficient by using green building practices. Come check it out and bring some friends. There is also a lot of other literature about sustainable living and what you can do to reduce energy consumption. Take Superior St. to 52nd Ave East, go up till you get to the dead end, take a right onto Broadwing Drive, take a right onto Snowy Owl Circle, follow to 2809. There will be a big Eco-Home sign. visit www.womenworking.org to see pictures and get more info. Hope to see you there!
U.S. wind companies invested nine billion dollars in 2007 building 5244 mw of new wind power facilities enough to power 1.5 million homes. It's a good thing none of that money is coming to Duluth
On the same vein I have been reading the energy platforms of all the canidates. Macain is nuclear as is Romney, Clinton looks like ethanol and Obama coal gasification. They all mentioned real renewables but all voted against that in the last energy bill.

Occasionally at work, we get customers who purchase coffee for forward deployed servicemembers over in Iraq or Afghanistan...as a vet, I can say that good coffee from anywhere is a more than welcome sight when you haven't seen home in a few months.
Anyhow, I'm pretty good at reading and interpreting military addresses, and when we got an order to fill for a Warrant Officer attached to a helicopter squadron stationed in Iraq, I seized the opportunity and slipped a couple of our vinyl window cling logos with "Thank You" written on the back into the box before it was sealed up and sent off to the post office.
This morning, we got an email with a picture showing the WO posing in his flight gear leaning against his H-60F (I think...I'd have to get a look at the fuselage to know for sure) and our Alakef logo in one of the bubble windows of his chopper.
neat.
That kinda made my day.
If I can get the photo, I'll post it.
Tomorrow is the 10 year anniversary of Title IX. Thought you might be interested in the two programs put on by UMD and the YWCA to mark this event.

Free and open to the public!
Free reception following lecture
Chancellor Kathryn A. Martin and the Royal D. Alworth, Jr. Institute for International Studies proudly present a lecture by former U.S. Vice President and U.S. Senator Walter F. Mondale on Thursday, January 31 at 1:30 p.m. in the UMD Weber Music Hall. Mondale's speech, titled "Foreign Policy Development and Presidential Candidates", is the Royal D. Alworth, Jr. Annual Memorial Lecture 2008.
Walter Mondale, drawing upon his vast political experience, will explore the foreign policy problems that the United States is experiencing in a turbulent world. Reviewing the pluses and minuses of working alone versus working with others, Mondale will evaluate the foreign policy stance taken by leading contenders in the race for the presidential nominations. More information about Walter Mondale can be found at the UMD News webpage, http://www.d.umn.edu/news/2008/January/08-A.html.
There is also an article about the lecture in today's DNT.

I had to do it. These are very limited edition. Available only at.

Israel announced today that they plan to install 500.000 recharging stations and battery swap stations in the next 18 months for electric cars being made by Renault . Peres sets goal to be over oil in 10 years thru the use of electric cars and solar power

In my column in the Transistor this week, I wrote:
Sooner of later, someone is going to make "Smurfs: The Movie." When that happens, it will be essential that some new Smurfs are added to the cast. I recommend the following:
Itchy Smurf, Bloody Smurf, Stinky Smurf, Horny Smurf, Paraplegic Smurf, Tickly Smurf, Suicidal Smurf, Klepto Smurf, Battered Smurf, Cannibal Smurf and Well-endowed Smurf.
Well, a few days later I was informed that International Merchandising, Promotion & Services has a deal with Paramount Pictures for a computer-animated 3-D Smurfs movie. (Yahoo! Movies has the scoop.)
So, you should probably comment on what Smurfs you think should be added to the cast.

Barb Olsen, who writes the Out of Order! column about the Duluth City Council for the Reader , has been doing a radio version for us on KUMD. This week she's introducing a segment called "the Columnist and the Curmudgeon" that features former City Councilor Russ Stewart ( the curmudgeon, obviously). They're talking about the Lakeside liquor ordinance this week with brand new City Councilors Todd Fedora and Jeff Anderson. Next week they'll talk about outdoor drinking areas for local bars with Nick Patronas, who owns Aces.
Check it out, Wednesday morning at 8:15. I'd love to hear feedback from any of you political junkies. It will be podcast after it airs, too.

Why have none of the canidates in the past election talked about what sustainability is? Why is this not an issue? Wind Turbines come in from Spain to North Dakota and they come back to Duluth from North Dakota to Spain. But not a single person from anywhere on either side knows what a Tessla Roadster is, much less the implications of this technology. We have patternmakers and welders .We have all that is needed here in Duluth to make windmills. This would be a karmic plus for Duluth. There are many reasons I dote on this. I'm not sure , but if you look out there I would say it,s on more of a downhill slde then uphill. If we stay addicted to oil some will go to the front. Another reason. I like windmills. And I know this is way to far fecthed. Rice Lake dump. Methane, wind and solar. Such a absurb idea. What would keep young people in a community. Do any of them like a green city. Do any of them know what photosynthesis is . How does that relate to Boulavard rain gardens? How does that relate to the orgainic gardeners in our area. George Oshawa said you eat what grows in your area But anyway DDD she's really hot

Ely's hospital (Ely-Bloomenson) is in serious need of a new MRI...but these suckers are 'spensive!
Fortunately they're in the running for a new machine, but here's the catch: there's an online contest to award some lucky community hospital the new machine.
it runs on votes (of course) so naturally, the hospital with the most votes wins...
SO...community conscious PDDers...head on over to WELY.com and click the link, watch the vid and vote...

The subject of blogs came up last week on KUWS' Final Edition. I held off on posting about it until they posted the full audio on their website.
The discussion about PDD and other blogs happens about halfway through.
+++
Joel Anderson (Moderator): "Do you guys in the working ... working journalists ... do you have to monitor the blogs? I mean, is that something you have to do? No? Just like you monitor the other stations or monitor radio?"
Greg Grell (WDSE - Almanac North): "Myself, I don't monitor them, but if somebody gives me a heads-up then I'll take a look. But ... you know, there's so much. There's a few different ones like Perfect Duluth Day ... that's a particularly liberal one. There's others that go the other way, and really so much of that on there is ... one person's opinion, and many times one person's uninformed opinion, that it's ... it's just not something I think you should spend a lot of time with. Sometimes, though, you know somebody will write something that is absolutely false about your organization and I think in that case, you know, you may want to ... at least keep tabs on it, whether or not you respond to it in any kind of official way ... at least try to set the record straight behind the scenes or whatever."
Ron Brochu (Daily Telegram): "There was a time when I watched one in Duluth, the uh ... what do they call it, the Citizen's Blog or whatever ... I don't know ... you know, really, if I wanted to listen to a bunch of totally uniformed whackos, you know, whose mouth is much bigger than their brain, I'd just go to a bar."
Mike Simonson (KUWS): "Well, you know what? I hadn't really been reading blogs until I ...."
Greg Grell (interjects): "Would you like to refer to a specific whacko?"
Joel Anderson: "Or a specific bar?"
Greg Grell: "Just so we can get something else started here?"
Ron Brochu: "About 95% of them, maybe."
Mike Simonson: "But you know, there is some good conversation on blogs, and it's conversation and people want to find stuff out, and then there's the people who are absolutely sure of everything. That they are absolutely right, and they'll name-call, you know, other people if they disagree. And to me, OK, that's when I'm done reading that blog, because now I'm wasting my time and I'm getting offended, and I'm not learning anything new."
Greg Grell: "I like it if somebody reasons and argues, but argues with an open mind ... and you're absolutely right, Mike ... there are some people that ... the name calling part is the part that really disturbs me. And it seems like in our society today, and I don't know if it's, you know, if it's what's been happening culturally or what it is, but it does seem like there are very few people that can argue a point without getting in, you know, to the mudslinging, to the name-calling. You know, they don't have an answer apparently, so instead they just belittle the person that they're debating with."
Mike Simonson: "You know, and I hope that that is going away. You know, I may be stupid and naive to say that, especially going into the 2008 election, you know that's right around the bend. We remember how awful the 2004 election was."

Fargo Ozzy / Zombie Concert Goers Busted in Sting Party
About 40 lucky people who were going to the Fargo Ozzy Osborne / Rob Zombie concert earlier this week got a special invitation to a pre-party from PDL productions. These people were all special because they had outstanding warrants, were delinquent on their child support, and so on. When they showed up to this PDL party Paul D. Laney (pictured), the local sheriff, was there to welcome them with open handcuffs.
Once again, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is.
I have to hand it to the sheriff's office there in Fargo. This was clever.

DNT: Do you think crime is getting worse in Duluth?
Charlie Bell: Yes.
DNT: Why so?
Charlie Bell: I think people have moved into Duluth that don’t belong here. I think we see people walking the streets that don’t fit the identities, that don’t fit what we normally have, don’t fit the citizens that have lived here for years and years. They do stand out.

Don't you find it refreshing when scientists can put aside prejudice and examine issues based on cold, hard facts?
Seriously, if this guy as a meteorologist wanted to argue the science behind the movie, I'm all ears. If he just wants to cast aspersions and call people names, then maybe Fox is hiring.
Energy giant EDF to put 250 recharging stations for electric cars in England . Manufacture , Elecktromotive to install them this year. You gotta wonder what kind of stupidity drives these people

Keokuk Iowa announced today that they are opening a factory to build wind turbine bases. The plant will employ 350 workers at a pay of 23.50 per hour. Three other factories have opened in Iowa this year building wind turbine parts. Accima Energy in West Branch, 110 jobs, Siemans in Fort Madison , 200 jobs and Clipper windpower in Cedar Rapids 140 jobs. It's a good thing that we don't look into this. It's a lot nicer to watch them come in and out of town.
I meant to post this last week and just never got to it. But since Frank made a hint toward it but never elaborted, I figured I'd get it up.
I use the city bus approximately 10 times a week - and might I add that I love not having to pay for gas, car repairs, etc. Anyway, last week I somehow managed to leave my wallet on the bus. After a frantic search it turns out a kindly passenger returned it to the driver and the driver had it at the transit hub in west Duluth. When I got there I had to wait for about 10 minutes because the driver that had it was apparently training someone. The secretary explained that the DTA received new state-of-the-art Hybrid busses and that all the drivers had to be trained to drive them because they're a little different. I thought that was very exciting news and was wondering why I hadn't heard of it up until now! On my way out I saw one of them sitting in the parking lot. Oh so very shiny and new. Not much different looking except for a little part on the top that says "HYBRID" I've read things about whether or not hybrid busses are actually worth it at the moment but I hold out hope that something good will come out of this. I love that Duluth is always trying to take a progressive step forward.

They're out there every day - sun, rain, wind, or cold, at the entrances to the UMD campus, fighting to hold the line on a decent standard of living. AFSCME-organized workers at UMD are fighting for a fair wage and fair treatment from the University system administration in the face of callous treatment and a cold shoulder. When the Minnesota state legislature allotted a 3.25 % raise for University system employees, all other job classes were given that or higher, but the lowest-paid Universtiy employees were only offered 2.25%, which won't keep pace with inflation. There's a great article on the details that appeared in the Minneapolis Star Tribune here.
The strikers need messages of support. Their fight is a fight against the continuing erosion of the middle class and the growing gap between the rich and the rest of us. Do you want to live as well as your parents? Want health care? Do you like the idea of a retirement? Weekends? 40-hour work weeks? When the unions were strong and strikes were frequent, most people took these things for granted; now the score is working two or three jobs to make ends meet. But I'm not jealous of unionized workers who won a higher wage through hard struggle; they are my brothers and sisters, and I stand shoulder to shoulder with the strikers because I know that some day I'll be in the same situation and need their solidarity on my side. I'm trying to improve my own standard of living, not by tearing anyone down or trying to get on top of the dogpile, but by helping workers who decide to stand up, and by trying to organize my own co-workers to do the same.
The University and the media (read: DNT) would like everyone to think that these low-paid workers are greedy and unorganized, they have no support in the community, and the strike is having no impact. If you sympathize with folks like Bob Brunicks who make seven-figure incomes and run their business from cushy offices, or if you think it's a good idea to sell UMD workers, your future and your kids' future down the river, go ahead and rant about clerical, technical and health care workers should be thankful for what pittance they have. But if you have an ounce of symphathy for the little guy, at least post some messages of support for our neighbors on the picket line. (They can always use help on the lines or at Strike Headquarters as well. But crossing the picket line, for whatever reason, or asking others to do the same, is NOT supportive).
So, Duluth, which side are you on?

I just want to encourage everyone, even Carla, to get out and vote today. We usually have a lower turnout for city primaries, hopefully this heated mayoral race raises it up a bit.
With the primary upon us, many of you must be wondering who to vote for. "What would Paul Lundgren do?" you will no doubt ask.
That's why, after careful study of all the candidates, I'm announcing my endorsement and putting up my yard sign.
This is the most amazing story I have heard in a while. Via the DNT.
'The only guy running nude in Duluth': Observation Hill couple recounts how they thwarted burglar
Mark Stodghill
Duluth News Tribune - 09/07/2007
Wayne and Kathie Boniface returned from a dinner at an Observation Hill neighbor’s home Thursday night to find a burglar in their house.Kathie Boniface asked the burglar who he was? “I’m with the FBI and you are blowing my cover,’’ the burglar said.
When Wayne Boniface got done with the intruder, he had no cover.
The suspect ran from the home carrying less than he came with. A lot less.

You know, when I'm vouchering for a business trip I always have to ask myself - Are in-room pornos and lubrication reimbursible? Apparently Duluth's County Commisioner, Dennis Fink, thinks so.
From the Timberjay:
The Fink investigation, released to the Timberjay on Wednesday, details a number of incidents in which Fink’s secretary indicates she was subjected to sexual comments or ogled by Fink or others in his presence. While the secretary had sought intervention from another commissioner several years ago, she indicated in her statements that the behavior continued.
The incident which finally precipitated the complaint occurred in March, 2007, after Fink had returned from a county-sponsored trip to Washington D.C. According to the report, Fink handed his secretary some receipts for reimbursement, including a grocery receipt that included a sexual lubricant and another hotel receipt that indicated Fink had ordered a sexually explicit movie.
The secretary said it was unusual for the commissioner to provide such receipts, since they weren’t reimburseable. Commissioners typically are reimbursed for daily expenses through a per diem, which does not require receipts.
According to the investigation, Fink inquired the next day as to whether his secretary had all the receipts she needed. She said she ignored his comment, but believed that the commissioner was trying to get a reaction from her due to the nature of the receipts.
Fink, in his statement, said the receipts had been given to his secretary in error, and were not intended to harass her.
He further denied making any of the sexual references reported by his secretary or having ogled her.

Tomorrow is the deadline to file for your Property Tax Refund. The MN Department of Revenue website has all the forms you need. You might be surprised at how much you get back.
Good Luck!

The Wilco show scheduled for tomorrow has been postponed. Here is the news from WilcoWorld.
We're sorry to report that our good friend and Wilco guitarist extraordinaire Nels Cline has recently contracted a rather nasty case of the CHICKEN POX (not sure that should be in all caps... but judging from the gruesome details in email correspondence we've had with NC, we'll leave it so). He is slowly on the mend but is not quite there yet, necessitating postponment of the Duluth, Minnesota show scheduled for this Tuesday night. That date will be rescheduled for Tuesday, September 4 and all tickets for the original date will be honored. Refunds will also be available to those of you unable to attend the Sept. 4 show. The show scheduled for this Wednesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba will either be postponed or cancelled but will NOT take place as scheduled. Details on refunds coming shortly.
We apologize for the inconvenience... but we're really glad Nels seems to be over the hump and hope to see you out there soon.
Regretfully,
the Wilco HQ staff
I'm glad they rescheduled but that is no solace for my house guests that came all the way from Chicago to see them.
I've been known to misplace my house keys and even my winter gloves, but they always seem to come back to me...unlike the U.S. Government who, in Iraq can't seem to locate about 190,000 AK47 Rifles and pistols that were supposed to be issued to the Iraqi police forces.
The article also gos on to say that over a quarter million (say it with me: "mmmmmmiiilllliiiooooooonnnn") pieces of body armor are also missing.
Any guesses as to where those rifles and kevlar vests are now?
Sounds pretty bad.
UPDATE: And here is the predictable conspiracy theory following in its wake (no endorsement implied).

From: the Mr. Nice For Mayor Campaign
www.myspace.com/mrniceformayor
July 17, 4:20pm Protest at City Hall:
Let Mr. Nice on the Ballot!!
Mid-late afternoon on Friday the 13th, 2007, the Mr. Nice Campaign called the City Clerk’s office of Duluth, MN and inquired about getting on the Mayoral ballot. The nice lady who answered the phone said he’d have to talk to her boss, Jeff Cox, but that he was taking a “very late lunch.” The Nice Campaign called Mr. Cox back after an hour.
And here is where Cox committed the act which propels this race for Mayor into the slime of political gamesmanship: we were told it was “not appropriate” for our candidate, the only blue candidate, to be allowed on the ballot. We were told it would detract from the office. The unspoken implication was that if Mr. Nice showed his face in the City Clerk’s office and tried to exercise his constitutional rights, that he would be immediately killed.
Mr. Nice fulfills ALL the requirements for being on the ballot: he is over 21 and a citizen of Duluth.
Mr. Nice’s sensational proposals to legalize gangsterism in order to fund more police to keep our communities safer, and to sell fighter jet parts from the air base to Iran to offset the retiree healthcare crisis, have led to a vast centrist conspiracy which intends to keep the people’s candidate off the ballot!
Like Hell They Will!
Mr. Nice will be assembling a vast army of chubby white Lutherans to celebrate our outrage at 4:20 PM on Tuesday, July 17th 2007, at the base of the flag by the fountain in front of City Hall!
Be a part of this action! Free “Mr. Nice For Mayor” T-shirts will be provided (while supplies last) and protest signs will be available.
Mr. Nice has proven he is the candidate who can solve the problems that plague our city. He is the Action Candidate with the “New Freshness Plan.” NOW do you want Nice on the Ballot?

Item One:
For those of you not aware, Harry Potter 7 is due out very soon to the joy of many fans and the hesitancy of many booksellers. Sell at a loss to compete with the big people? Not carry the title and disappoint loyal customers? Even B&N and Borders are hesitant. Locally owned stores face even greater challenges in terms of clout with publishers, advertising, ability to discount, and places to store the tomes in question. Northern Lights Books is throwing a party as a way to establish community and reclaim the joy that should accompany as huge a publishing success as Harry Potter should be to those who love books.
In times that media seems so proud to tote the democracy in our purchasing power, it is disappointing that this has not caught more attention. I'm not calling for a Harry Potter Czar to control prices, but for people who think that they are making statements through their purchases to look above the bottom line in this circumstance in the same way they do with their organic tomatoes.

To our final Third Thursday of the season. This Thursday at the Red Star Martini Bar. 7-10pm. That's right, we're taking th summer off to finely craft our "breezy lounge vibe" and work on our upcoming album workingly entitled "Last Night Never Happened".
I ran across an interesting article on Middle East online, by way of cursor.org by Ismael Hossein-Zadeh, a professor of Economics at Drake University about the escalation of war and military spending. This economic info should be staggering (to say the least) to anyone on either side of the fence.
He makes some really grim comparisons on military budgets versus government spending in other areas, causing a dramatic shift in the distribution of wealth from the middle and lower income to the already wealthy by noting the impending permanence of tax cuts to the richest 1%, and then the plan to cut vital services and programs in order to make up the difference in money coming in.
For perspective, he quotes comparisons in the article made by William D. Hartung, Senior Fellow at the World Policy Institute in New York:
Proposed US military spending for FY 2008 is larger than military spending by all of the other nations in the world combined.
At $141.7 billion, this year's proposed spending on the Iraq war is larger than the military budgets of China and Russia combined. Total US military spending for FY2008 is roughly ten times the military budget of the second largest military spending country in the world, China.
Proposed US military spending is larger than the combined gross domestic products (GDP) of all 47 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
The FY 2008 military budget proposal is more than 30 times higher than all spending on State Department operations and non-military foreign aid combined.
The FY 2008 military budget is over 120 times higher than the roughly $5 billion per year the US government spends on combating global warming.
From New Scientist:
Female ducks and geese have evolved complex genitalia to thwart unwelcome mating attempts, according to a new study.
Males of some species, such as mallard, have a notorious habit of "raping" females. They and other wildfowl are among the 3% of bird species whose males have phalluses big enough to insert into the vaginas of females, whether or not the female consents.
Now, in the most detailed analysis yet of duck and goose vaginas, researchers have established that females of these species have evolved vaginal features to thwart unwelcome males.
Tim Birkhead at the University of Sheffield in the UK and colleagues examined vaginas and the corresponding phalluses from 16 wildfowl species. They discovered that the longer and more elaborate the male member, the longer and more elaborate its female recipient was.
No-entry signs
Some vaginas had spiral channels that would impede sex by twisting in the opposite direction to that of the male phallus. Others had as many as eight cul-de-sac pouches en route, that could prevent fertilisation by capturing unwelcome sperm. Moreover, these features were only found in species renowned for forced sex. All other species had simple male and female genitalia.
“These structures are wonderfully devious, sending sperm down the wrong road or impeding penetration,” says Birkhead.
He says that the features demonstrate an evolutionary "arms race" in which control over reproduction alternates between the sexes. If the male develops a longer, more elaborate phallus to force copulation, females wrest back control by developing features to thwart males who rape.
“It shows that females are not passive in averting exploitation by males with large phalluses,” says Birkhead.
