Who the Hell is the Rat Root River Band?

rat.jpg
If you've never been to the Blue Crab(1909 W Superior St.)- or even if you have- I highly suggest you go check it out on Friday night @ 10. The Rat Root River Band will be playing, along with a surprise guest. It's The RRRB's first gig(!), which is always fun and anxiety-ridden. What does RRRB taste like? Sort of a roasted Haus Meeting with a side of psychedelic relish and three-part-harmony gravy (with giblets). It's art rock, butt without the rock art. Let's show The 'Crab who the REAL experimental venue is in town!

In addition to or place of weight-loss challenges

why not try a Brain-Gain challenge for 2009? As a lover of books and bookstores, I was quite inspired by this Independent Bookstore Readers Challenge. (They also have other great reading challenges to peruse.)

In addition to holding myself to that challenge, I'm also going to challenge myself to attend at least two more literary/educational/art/music/theatre events than I did in 2008, and, more importantly, to make a greater effort to discuss the experiences. I forget the importance of reflection - it'd be nice to share more of those experiences so we can all be a little more informed and inspired for the next event!

Trouble in PotteryVille...

I woke up this morning with THAT feeling! I had solved my Holiday gift giving dilemma - the obvious answer - CREATE MY OWN GIFTS! (duh)....so, I made the call to Duluth Pottery where I have spent many hours creating tiles and bowls, hoping to be accepted with open arms and WILD encouragement to be creative...surprisingly, I was DENIED!!!! I mean, I looked at my calendar and saw it was ONLY December 4th...and yet, I was told that there was NO WAY I could stop in and throw a few mugs..."we don't do that here" she said...WHAT THE? To be fair, I was offered the opportunity to buy some clay and put my pieces in a special firing on friday...BUT...and I quote..."THEY MIGHT BLOW UP!" Can anyone help me? I simply need to throw 4 mugs and get them glazed and fired in the next three weeks?

DINK TANK sets their sights on Santa!

Dink Tank Holiday Poster for PDD.jpg

The sketch comedy troupe the Duluth News Tribune called "Devastatingly Funny" is back for an evening of holly jolly hilarity! Dink Tank proudly presents their annual holiday comedy revue, continuing the grand tradition Renegade has carried for nearly two decades. Styled after "Kids in the Hall", "Monty Python," and "Mr. Show," Dink Tank skewers politics, takes pot shots at pop culture, and creates hysterical, memorable characters from their own warped imaginations.

Dink Tank contains adult content. Seriously, don't bring the kids.

WMW poster small.jpg

White Man’s World turns independent filmmaking on its head. Director Jason Page is sure he's a visionary genius. So why isn't he famous yet? Could it be the color of his skin? Follow him and his comrades onto the reservation in this outrageous look at low-budget, high-concept filmmaking.

See the film tonight & tomorrow night at Teatro Zuccone (222 E. Superior St) - 7 & 9pm each night. Tickets are $10 at the door or by calling 218-336-1414.

No Authors?

While I love the Duluth Scensters section of the Tribune's website to promote local artists and musicians, I noticed there were no local writers in there. We have a lot of local authors who I am sure could be considerd scensters about town. Anyone know any of them?

Fortunate Wilderness

Filmmaker George Desort will premiere his movie, Fortunate Wilderness at the Marshall Performing Arts Center (UMD) on Nov. 6 at 7 :00 pm (The film premiere is free!). George is a thoughtful artist and delivers a beautiful look at the wolf-moose research of Isle Royale. The human relationship with the natural world is at the heart of the movie.

The movie should provide an added draw to Duluthians, as the band Low has contributed original music to support the images. George has shared that he feels a connection between Low's music and his own work.

Watch for posters advertising other great events scheduled for Nov 5-7. Duluth will be celebrating the 50 years of wolf moose research in a way that honors special wild places.

liberty parade featuring my car and retribution

If you're planning on heading to the twin cities this weekend, be sure to check out the Liberty Parade on Sunday. After the parade is a ton of free music including the Retribution Gospel Choir.

Also, my art car the Geo Chalker (www.geochalker.com) has been asked to be in the parade. Because it's an interactive art car, I would need a few people to walk along side it to help hand out chalk. If you've ever wanted to ride in a parade, here's you chance.

ride in my car

on sunday, august 31st, the liberty parade will roll though minneapolis as an alternative to the protests happening that week. the geo chalker will be rolling in that parade. i would love to have a few bodies help me out by passing out chalk so people can write on the car and also on the sidewalks. i was also thinking (but not positive on this yet) as pushing the car through the parade as a way to help save the environment. it's a geo so it wouldn't be that hard. it would be really cool to find some way to attach bikes to pull it but I don't think that will happen.

if you're going to be in minneapolis and want to ride with the chalker and then enjoy the good times and music at loring park, then come along for the ride.

Paint The Great Outdoors!

Artist Camping Safari At Snowflake Nordic Center
(An Introduction To Plein Air Painting)
Progression Of 4 Three-Hour Workshops
Thursday Through Sunday Mornings
Select From Four Dates:

  • June 26-29, 2008
  • July 10-13, 2008
  • July 17-20, 2008
  • July 24-27, 2008

Cost: $180 for all four workshops in each set of dates. Students furnish their own materials and supplies. Click here to view list. Includes 4 night campsite stay; Wednesday - Saturday Location: Snowflake Nordic Center, 4318 Rice Lake Road, Duluth, Mn 55811

Enjoy Camping And Painting En Plein Air
Combine Your Camping Trip To Duluth, Minnesota and the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior with our art workshops. This is a beginner's course in Oil painting like no other. It combines an introduction to painting outdoors (en plein air) and comfortable camping. We offer a series of four, 3-hour classes conducted outdoors at Snowflake Nordic Skiing and Camping Center in Duluth (we move into the Chalet in case of inclement weather). Classes begin at 9:00am each morning and finish up around noon. Spend the rest of your day hiking the scenic x-country trails at Snowflake or there's plenty of time to enjoy Duluth, Canal Park or even take a day trip up the North Shore and view the many spectacular waterfalls, lighthouses and panoramic views of Lake Superior.

About The Workshops:
If you've never painted or if you've tried and failed with some of those vague "how to" books, these workshops are for you. In each workshop we will complete a 9x12 landscape painting that you can take home and hang on your wall. We will get acquainted with composition, color harmony, brushwork and perspective (linear and atmospheric). In the process, we'll also get you organized so you can paint a simple landscape "en plein air (outdoors)" in a single session (Alla Prima) with confidence and without fear. Classes are designed to start simple and get more advanced as we progress. Instruction is "hands on" with just the right amount of "serious" and "fun"...and punctuated with Champagne breaks (Korbel Brut). Registration fees include campsite accomodations (you supply the tent) from Wednesday night through Saturday night.

About Snowflake Nordic Ski Center:
Snowflake offers summer camping sites throughout its 180 acres of scenic x-country trails complete with firepits and picnic tables at each site, all within close proximity to the Chalet. Facilities at the Chalet include private bathrooms with hot showers, laundry facilities, snacks, concessions and a variety of other services. Located on the outskirts of Duluth in a forest setting, Snowflake offers quick access to Duluth, Canal Park and the scenic North Shore of Lake Superior. Click here to view their website.

Doing The Fishstick

Below is a video of me doing the Fishstick. For those new to this latest dance craze, here is a description:

1. Beginners should perform the Fishstick to the tune “Tighten Up” by Archie Bell & the Drells. “For presentation and learning purposes, you would want [’Tighten Up’] going.” -Adam Lisagor

2. The Fishstick should be subtle. “Unless you’re really staring at someone doing the Fishstick, you wouldn’t know that they were dancing.”-Scott Simpson; “…the Fishstick is mostly happening in your head.”-Merlin Mann

3. Performances may look like minor neurological disorders. To an untrained observer, “it might look like somebody was thinking about something…maybe trying to remember something, or that they’re having a very slight palsy.” -Merlin Mann

4. While generally done as a solo dance, the Fishstick can be performed “alone, with a study partner, or while […] waiting for something to finish cooking.” -Merlin Mann

Another way of describing the Fishstick, is "facial kegels".

Enthralled Spectators

Participation in the arts was a much a part of the citizen's activities as service on the council or in the law courts, with their six thousand judges. Each spring festival brought a contest between tragic dramatists: this called for twelve new plays annually, with the participation of one hundred and eight choral singers and dancers; while each contest in comedies demanded sixteen new plays yearly and a hundred and forty-four choral singers and dancers. In the hundred years of the Empire, Ferguson tells us, two thousand plays of picked quality were written and staged in Athens, while six thousand new musical compositions were created and presented.

These esthetic activities demanded participation on an even greater scale than in the mystery pageants and miracle plays of the Middle Ages: every year something like two thousand Athenians, it has been estimated, had to memorize the words and practice the music and dance figures of a lyric or a dramatic chorus. This was an intellectual discipline as well as an esthetic experience of the highest order; and as an incidental result no small part of the audience consisted of ex-performers, expert judges and critics as well as enthralled spectators.

Comic school of art courtesy of former suck.com

For those of you that can draw and like a chuckle...

PART ONE: Basic Laws of Comic Drawing

* Crooked lines are funnier than straight lines.
* Dotted lines are funnier than solid lines.
* Light colors are funnier than dark colors.
* Flat is funnier than perspective.
* Ugly is funnier than cute.
* Top-heavy objects are funnier than bottom-heavy ones.
* Really big is funnier than really small.
* Small kitchen appliances are funnier than furniture. Always include either a blender or, better yet, a toaster in every kitchen setting.

Drama and intrigue in the paint aisle

My sister was in town last week to see me and the house I bought a few months ago. Since she possesses the boldness, decisiveness and sense of style that I lack, we went out to pick paint colors - my first time shopping for paint in years.

I expected to see paint color names like Biscotti and Cranberry Punch. But they went way, way beyond that. Emotions, events, sensationalism... it was as if US Weekly had set up shop in the paint store.

As I went through shades of red and tan, I started to piece together the chronology of a story using only paint color names. Here's what I came up with:

Lonely
Dreamin' Romance
Touch of Cupid
Suspicious Love
Sangria
Love You Lots
It's a Girl
Pink Fantasies
Happy Trails

Oh, and there also was a paint color named "Global Warming." Who knew?

Backcountry Powder in Duluth

This weekend my friend Henry and I decided to make the best of the ample snow in the hills of Duluth. We both have a history of living in the mountains and spend a good amount of time hiking and skinning the steeps to find the best off-piste turns. Living in Duluth doesn't offer a whole lot of the steep and deep so we decided to go for a hike and do some skiing - regardless of whether it was only five or eight turns instead of the 50 or 100 we'd have gotten out West . Watch the 2:08 video we put together on YouTube.

ELFIS!!

After spending a couple holiday seasons abroad, I returned poo-pooing the extravagant, gaudy Christmas displays in America. Now that I have a child, though, I am absolutely giddy about the kitsch and events surrounding this season. I love Christmas in the Northland.

This year the little pirate and I went to "Scrooge" at the Playhouse (btw, really good production), "The Nutcracker" performed by the Minnesota Ballet and Monroe's Christmas show.
But tonight is the event I've been looking forward to for a year:

Super Secret Show UNVEILED!!

radpic.jpg
What a view! I am writing this from a certain hotel lobby, home to a certain rotating restaurant, where a certain band (okay, Haus Meeting) is rounding out the guerilla part of its 2007 Full Haus Tour, with a show in the totally radical (and cozy!) pool area at 9pm. Don't like your hair freezing? You don't have to swim to enjoy the show, but its encouraged. You don't even have to bring any cream corn, but you might regret it. It'd be super swell to see everyone there. Oh yeah... SHHHHHHHH! It's a secret. So is the fact that we have a room here (#914, if anyone asks).

Actors Needed

chickenhamlet2.jpgOne day commitment!

Morning: Get script.
Afternoon: Practice, practice, practice.
Evening: Perform.
Night: Party, party, party.

What could be better?

Out of the Hat 10 could use a few more actors on Friday (Nov. 9) and the more the merrier on Saturday (Nov. 10). Again, it's only a one day commitment and it's a lot of fun. Contact Brian Matuszak for more information.

Oh, and when you perform on Saturday you have a roughly 1 out of 8 chance of performing a script written by our new mayor. You have the same odds of performing a script that I've written, but don't think about that right now.

name that blog!

I need your blogging expertise for an art car project. I have a 1996 black 4door geo tracker that is starting to rust away. I'm not ready to give it up yet as I love this little car. It's gone across the country, climbed up the tallest mountain in CO, pulled numerous people out the snow, and never fails to impress me, even when I think it's going to die. It's not the prettiest thing anymore (slightly better looking than the image below) so I decided to let others make it pretty for me.

I'm going to be spraypainting Pepe with chalkboard paint and having my friend weld a metal box to the back door that will hold chalk. I'm going to encourage people to draw whatever they want on Pepe (within reason of course). I'll continue to take pictures and upload them to the blog. Additionally, I will encourage people to take a photo of them next to their completed piece and send it to me. If they took video of them chalking my car, that would be great too.

Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation arts survey

I found this today and thought this might be an appropriate venue to re-post it on.

I've never heard of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation, but Business North has a press release about the organization's "Art Works" survey. It's a survey to ask Twin Ports residents, artists, and business owners what the current status is of the art industry in the area, and how it can be improved by tying art into local businesses. Since many of us here fall into at least *one* of the categories--and this may be a great tool to raise awareness of the art scene in the area, I thought I'd post it. The survey is here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=1ffzzE0N6_2faOQvghkfDpRA_3d_3d

Did I spell "tying" right? I doesn't look right. I need coffee.

The deadline has passed, the entries are in and now it is your chance to vote. There are six entries in the NELS CLINE GAVE ME THE CHICKEN POX T-shirt design contest. Voting will take place by email [starfire at gmail dot com]. Send me the number of your favorite design and whether or not you might actually like to buy one. There is no obligation to purchase one but I just want to get an idea of how many to print. They will be printed in Mens and Womens sizes most likely on American Apparel T's. More details will emerge when a winner is selected. I will accept votes until Wednesday August 29th at 5PM CST.

Thanks for all the entries and good voting!

P is for Perfect Duluth Day.

SoundsCollage.jpg

Beware: Shameless self-promotion ahead...
I've wanted to illustrate a book for kids for a long time. As they say, be careful what you wish for. After months of late nights, working weekends, ignoring my kids and avoiding my friends, I've finished 2 ABC books for a publisher in the cities. The first one, My Favorite Sounds from A to Z is available now, and the second, My Favorite Places from A to Z will be out later this fall. They'll be at Northern Lights Books in Canal Park, and can probably be ordered from other fine book retailers.

Also, look for a show of this and other art at Pizza Luce in December.

Artists are encouraged to bring statements and proposals to work on. In October, bring your finished proposal and work samples, and by the end a concept and theme will be decided by the group. November’s meeting will focus on the installation process and the following week, the DAI Nexus exhibition will open at the Depot.

Once a month, the Duluth Art institute opens its doors to artists of all ages, skill levels and mediums. It is the hope that the Artist Nexus becomes a matching point for artists, fostering the arts community. Artists are encouraged to bring current work, conceptual ideas or food to share.

2 Bookish Items, Several Tidbits and News of which to be aware

Item One:
For those of you not aware, Harry Potter 7 is due out very soon to the joy of many fans and the hesitancy of many booksellers. Sell at a loss to compete with the big people? Not carry the title and disappoint loyal customers? Even B&N and Borders are hesitant. Locally owned stores face even greater challenges in terms of clout with publishers, advertising, ability to discount, and places to store the tomes in question. Northern Lights Books is throwing a party as a way to establish community and reclaim the joy that should accompany as huge a publishing success as Harry Potter should be to those who love books.
In times that media seems so proud to tote the democracy in our purchasing power, it is disappointing that this has not caught more attention. I'm not calling for a Harry Potter Czar to control prices, but for people who think that they are making statements through their purchases to look above the bottom line in this circumstance in the same way they do with their organic tomatoes.

Vote for the Hometown Team

48hrfilm.gif

Those crazy kids out in Wrenshall are at it again. Mr Mike Scholtz and his filmmaking crew participated in their 2nd 48 hr Film Project last weekend. It'll be screened in Minneapolis at the super-cool Riverview Theater (3800 42nd Street S., in Minneapolis) Monday, June 18. This year, they're entered under the team name Free Range Film Fest. Films from other teams are being screened all week this week.

Each night, the audience votes for the best films, which then get shown again on another date. Then films get judged on stuff like Best Directing, Best Script, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Acting, Best Use of Character, Best Use of Prop, Best Use of Line, Best Music, Best Sound Design, Best Effects.

The people's votes are necessary.

Rappers?

Ah, when you go into production on your micro-budget film, and you cast people back, oh, I don't know..7 months ago and you THINK they have their sh*t together but then 5 days before you shoot you find out they don't and then they flake out on you when your director expresses disappointment, you can sort of feel every blood vessel in your brain shutting down.

So, here I am again.... any RAPPERS out there? The thing is this - two "old testament" rappers (the O.G.'s of the O.T.) who rap these very wordy old testament "songs." The beats are done, the rap is written and we *thought* being rehearsed. So there you go.

if anyone's interested (shooting this weekend!! short notice but I'm getting desperate) email me at carrie(at)4trackfilms(dot)com

thanks

Tangier 57 has built our reputation on a promise to bring you technological gizmodigry disguised as musical entertainment. Such as the Organ-Bar, bubble machines, In-Lounge movies, and fashion-forward, cruelty-free drums.
So we're pleased to announce the latest addition to our arsenal of technological wonders, our Theremin.

While we're still working out some issues with size and bluetooth connectivity, we're excited about this beta version. Steve Jobs has been invited to tonight's show.

Free Democracy Summit (April 13-15)

This weekend (April 13-15) is the 4th annual Free Democracy Summit - a weekend of art, education, and inspiration. It has been put on by students from the MPIRG (Minnesota Public Interest Research Group) chapter of UMD for the past four years, focusing on homelessness and housing, environmental issues, trade policies, discrimination, and much more through panel discussions, music, workshops, activities, and community gathering! I posted a schedule of what will be happening during the course of the weekend. It is a really great way to connect with people on the issues that really do affect all of us. The whole weekend is free, Becky Lourey will be speaking, and we have some great Native American music and art events happening Friday night. Check it out!

Ray the Wolf at Beaner's Saturday night 10pm UPDATED

Ray the Wolf (late of Crew Jones) and his new Co-op Crew are playing a not-advertised-in-the-Transistor show at Beaner's Saturday night 10pm. That makes it even more underground than the aborted show at Dick's that got SDBTC*. Ray & Co. are going to have pent-up frustrations from that so this should be a wall-banger. Also check his style out at Ray's myspace page www.myspace.com/raythewolf.

*Shut Down By The Cops.

UPDATE: This show rocked. Ray was in full effect and he has a great band, to wit: straight outta Evelyth Jason Kokes on bass, Cool Brad who is a monster on drums, El Lobo who was crazy!!! and Nate on backup vox or whatever they call it in the rap world. Can't wait to see you guys at Homegrown.

I (heart) Muzak

I work in the Technology Center. Or the Tech Village. Or the Village. Or that building at Lake and Superior ... whatever it's called.
This time of year, the muzak has a holiday theme I love. They program music from old christmas specials, movies and other stuff.
You should stop by and take a listen. I've found that the best place to hear it is in the bathroom. While sitting there rockin' out, I've also discovered that the lights in the bathroom are controlled by a motion detector. Set for 2 minutes, if you really want to know.
It can be a little disturbing having the lights go out while you're sittin' on the crapper.

The music is always playing, however.

Bloody Art?

Have you ever been to the Gas Light Fine Bar and Cocktail Room in Sandstone? It is housed within a cool little ... get this ... *sandstone* building ... it used to be the old bank... and has very interesting and peculiar insides... including the patrons. On this first trip... after hiking at Banning State Park... We ran into this guy... making an entire row of Bloody Mary's... now I am not an expert on the Bloody's... however, this guy appeared to have it down to an art. Fun to watch... I wonder what they taste like? I had the Guinness on tap.

Go See A Midsummer Night's Dream

Today at 2pm is your last chance! It's hands down the best entertainment bargain this weekend at only $5.

I went to see A Midsummer Night's Dream last night at Harbor City High with my parents and my kids and all of us were immensely entertained. Sure, I was worried about bringing my 8 year old to a Shakespearean play, but by scene two he was bouncing up and down in his seat and roaring with laughter. What he didn't get in the language was more than made up for by the acting. And at a total running time of an hour and forty five minutes, it was just about the right length.

Now, this is a high school production and the acting is uneven, but overall I was very, very impressed. Also, this may be the only A Midsummer Night's Dream production in the history of the play that prominently features bellydancing.

Anyway, if you are just waking up and wondering what you are going to do on this rainy Sunday, do this! You won't be disappointed.

It's a Brand New Hat!

fred-hat.JPG
Out of the Hat 7, June 9 & 10, is looking for writers, directors, and a whole lotta actors. Yes, you can be a part of the first production in the new Renegade facility (right next door to Carmody in case you needed more persuading). Contact Brian Matuszak if you are interested.

For those uninitiated to the ways of the hat, the writers get their prompts the night before the show, they have until the following morning to write a short (10 minute) work. The following morning the directors draw scripts from the hat. The plays are casted out of the hat. They have the morning and afternoon to get the work on its feet. It goes up that night. I think of it as the triathalon of sketch comedy.

The best thing is that it is only a one day commitment, though you have to be fully committed for that day. So, if you got the theatre bug, but don't have 6 weeks to devote to a full stage production, this is a pretty good fix.

Flickr Photowalk.

Lets take a Photo walk.

Chuck has a great story today at MN Stories about their last Flickr Photowalk. I think we should start our own Duluth version of this. So I declare this Sunday, April 30th at 11am to be the first Duluth Flickr Photowalk. This coincides with the monthly Metro area walk.

Now I guess we need to pick a starting point. Any ideas? Maybe we could meet at the Looch for some coffee and then walk around downtown snapping photos to our hearts content or until our memory cards fill up.

Flickr for those who have not heard of it is a photo sharing website in which you can Tag photos to make them searchable by others. So after our walk you could go home, set up an account and upload your favorite photos tagging them "Duluth Flickr Photowalk." When they are all uploaded you can watch a slideshow of everyones photos, cool huh?

This is not a digital camera only event by the way. All types of image capturing devices are welcome. Plus it looks as if the temps will be in the 40's so dress warm. Any other questions send me an email.

Then to cap off the evening, Denise Sweet, Wisconsin's Poet Laureate, will be reading at Somer's Lounge in St. Scholastica. Also free.

Compromise

hello_jesus.gif

Y'know, while perusing the 120-odd comments on the Creepy Japanese Things topic, I was suddenly struck with a thought: "We're Better Than This."

It really is narrowminded to focus our ridicule on the Japanese. Sure the Japanese are an easy target. But let's face it -- there's plenty to point out and mock in this world. From Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi pretending to hump a meter maid, to the oh-so-American picturesofjesus4you.com, people all over this world are just begging for our hot links and tasty comments.

I believe that the best way to solve this debate is to stop arguing and pool our creative talents to improve this blog. PDD is filled with creative people who have great ideas. We need to come up with a new category name that really shines. It can't just be "Creepy Things" or anything lame like that. It needs to be witty. It needs to be good.

So let's have a contest for the renaming of the Creepy Japanese Things category. Post your ideas as comments. The winner will receive a PDD T-shirt, five PDD stickers, and a burned copy of Phil Collins' No Jacket Required album.

Finally, I'd like to say that I've been friends with Jon since we were 16 years old. I hope we will remain friends. Also I want everyone to know that Jon is indeed Asian, that I took gym class with him in high school, and that certain stereotypes, in this case at least, are true.

He'll argue otherwise, but he sucks at math.

Renegade Finds a Home

renegade.gifI got news this morning in my in-box that Renegade Comedy Theatre, which has been in exile for a year and a half, has finally found a home downtown at 222 East Superior Street, right across from the Greysolon Plaza, formerly the St. Louis County Health Department building. They hope to start performing there in June with Out of the Hat 7. Huzzah!

Wrestlemania III-93,173 watch Hulk Hogan beat Andre the Giant
Andre the Giant.jpg

It was billed as the biggest main event in the history of sports entertainment . Hulk Hogan Vs Andre the Giant . Hogan , in his third year as WWE Champion , was set for the biggest challenge of his life in the form of the 7-foot-4, 520 pound Andre , who betrayed his former best friend in exchange for his long-awaited shot at the championship . The Pontiac Silverdome was packed with 93,173 fans for this classic , which Andre nearly ended in about two minutes after Hogan failed at an attempted bodyslam . Eventually , Hogan would amaze the audience by slamming Andre ! One leg drop later , Hogan vanquished his greatest challenge to date and beat the previously undefeated Andre the Giant .

Geekprom Band

(The only band that could top this geekiness is They Might Be Giants.)
Ladies and Gentlemen. Allow me to introduce you to Leslie Hall and the LY's. This is a real bonafide group and an internet sensation. They may be perhaps the greatest Geekprom musical contender to ever walk the face of our mostly harmless planet. They have an actual album and occasionally tour.

I expect to see them headlining next year's Geekprom.

Hear some of their songs here. I recommend Zombie Killer. I mean come on, ZOMBIE KILLER! A ballad about zombies? I challenge you to find a greater song for the Geek Prom King and Queen to dance to.

Homegrown: Only 40 (?) Days Away

Hotrod-Toto2.jpg

This is Hotrod Heartthrob, standing next to the lead singer of TOTO, shortly after Hotrod sang "Rosanna" with the band. It may not be the TOTO, as their Web site says they're playing SCHEIDEGG CH tonight. Wherever that is, it's not close to the Forest Lake bar where Hotrod accidentally encountered TOTO. (And yeah, the singer guy -- whatever his name is -- said Hotrod had a better falsetto than him.)

Basically, this post is a reminder that the Homegrown Music Festival exists primarily as a showcase for Bone Appetit. From winning the event to headlining it to saving it (as they did last year, when they filled in for a missing band), Bone Appetit dominates the Duluth music scene, even when they live in the cities and play only sporadically.

Low, assorted bands with the word "Black" in your name, fake punk "grrrl" bands, Northeastern Minnesota rappers: Bow before the alter of Bone Appetit

Bushra Rehman Reading/Slam

I saw Bushra Rehman read and speak about her work on Monday up at UMD. Her poems are heartfelt, sincere and open personal experiences into expansive realms, at times, and reflective moments at others. I'm not sure how much reading she'll be doing, as she's listed as a guest speaker at the slam, but she's worth checking out. It's also worth jumping on for the slam itself.
Pizza Luce 8pm Thursday night.

Passing it Along.

I'm passing this email from Donny Ness to you all in hopes that you musician types are in the know.

Dear friends of Homegrown, Things are changing with Homegrown this year and I wanted to give you a quick heads up. The festival now has non-profit status and is being run by a steering committee chaired by Alan Sparhawk and Amy Abts. Its a really good group, we've have a good plan for the year and I think we can make the festival even better than before. The top priority for the group this year is to be sure that all the bands enjoy the Homegrown experience and are paid for their set. We see Homegrown as a celebration of the local scene and a thank you to everyone who contributes to it throughout the year.

We are also looking for feedback and ideas from everyone who has a stake in Homegrown - we also want to keep in touch throughout the year and give updates on a regular basis with what's going on with the festival. We are planning to have a large gathering sometime in February or March as an opportunity for you and your band mates to share your thoughts on the 05 Homegrown and looking ahead to the 06 Homegrown. First things first, we need to get up-to-date contact information for everyone.

I need full names, e-mail, phone, and mailing addresses of everybody who plays in your band(s), including yourself. We have some contact information, but very little - we want to have a full database of local musicians so that we can send you mailings and other information as it relates to Homegrown. If you could get that to me by early next week, that would be a huge help. We want to mail a letter and survey to everyone by the middle of the month.

Also, if you know of new bands, artists in the area who have not played Homegrown before - send us their name(s) and any contact info you might have for them. Thanks for your help and you can look forward to more information from us in the near future...

happy little clouds...

Bob Ross Rules So Hard!

This rules so much! Bob Ross, one of my favorite television personalities ever, passed to the other side a while back but his spirit lives on. Ace Hardware downtown is offering several painting classes this winter instructed by Bob Ross approved teachers. There are 4 paintings to choose from and they are offering each class twice. V-Nick and I are signed up for the February 11th Snowbound Cabin class. The best part is that it only costs $15.00. The classes last three hours and you walk away with your own Happy Little Clouds. All supplies are provided.

For more info go here. You can also call Ace Hardware at 218-722-4496.

Seriously, we should pack the 2/11/06 class with PDD'ers. Of course there will be some sweet Vlog action taking place.

Luce Cuts Back on Music.

luceluce.jpg

This might be old news by now but not to me. Pizza Luce is cutting way back on music especially lower drawing local bands. You can read a thread aboout this topic here. So what does that leave Duluth with? The Tap Room, Brewhouse, Sir Ben's. Duluth's "scene" continues to shrink. What happened to the glory days? I have pretty much stopped contributing but where is the next generation? What is the next great age of Duluth aRt going to be?

Discuss.

Can't wait for summer

A few times in my life (not yet in Duluth), I've looked down at the pavement and spotted art just sitting in the street. Not on the street, in the street. How did a rogue graphitti artist create this permanent art, then embed it in the pavement?!? Now I know. Come summer, I may have to branch my delinquency into new areas...

Sky Rats - Perfect art exhibition for Duluth

Could there possibly a better artistic representation of our city?
kader-attia.jpg

Picture 1
Picture 2 (I am such a morbid fuck - I laughed hysterically at this one)
Picture 3
Artist's site

"Kader Attia presents, here, an installation whose title is taken from the English expression flying rats, which refers to pigeons : the visitors find themselves face to face with a birdcage containing 150 pigeons and 45 children made from moose mixed with compacted bird grain. In what seems to be a recreation courtyard, girls and boys play with marbles or squabble while the pigeons are slowly devouring them. Throughout the exhibition, it will be the pigeons that appropriate the space provoking the evolution of the piece. With all the utilisation precautions connected with a volatile security and vigorous hygiene rules, the birdcage will therefore become a natural habitat, a microcosm in which the pigeons will make there nest and will devour the children. Beyond the cruelty of the scene, Kader Attia wishes to remind us that childhood is probably the period in the life that we see further and further behind us but still think of very nostalgically".
