The Local

KUMD_TheLocal.jpg

Starting February 18th I will be hosting a local music show on KUMD called simply enough "The Local." It will air on Wednesdays from 5-6pm and I will be playing local and regional music as well as a weekly music calendar and interviews. There may also be live performances but I have to get my feet wet first.

In order to make this the best show possible I need your help. KUMD has a pretty good collection of local music but it is far from complete so if you are in a band and have not sent your discography to the station now is the time to do it. Simply send it to the station at the address below or if you see me out and about I will gladly get it there for you.

I am excited to finally be on the air legally and I hope you all give the show a listen. Thanks.

SEND MUSIC TO:
KUMD
attn: The Local
130 Humanities

Duluth, MN 55812

You may also drop off discs at my shop at 1131 E 4th St.

hiya,
do you play lpees?
i can provide you with a 7inch from shana david's first ep, terminally bourgeois. we are recent duluthian transplants..

you can read about it..www.shrugrecords.com

tim!

do you play lpee's? the first release on my vinyl only label by shana david would qualify as local. we recently moved to the duluth.

you can take a peek here: shrugrecords.com

Very cool, I am looking forward to listening to your new show, Starfire.

Cool! It's nice to have some decent local music that's not tucked into the midnight-2am slot.
A word to the wise, if you invite a band in for live performances, keep an eye out for rampant cd theft. Some people don't know not to bite the hand that gives them free publicity. :/

Starfire, this is an EXTREMELY long overdue development. Like coming into the promised land from the desert, yippee! I hope they they consider recording and archiving the shows on their website or podcasting the local show, etc as the time slot won't work for everyone, but the content and character is sure to be awesome.

It's a transparent attempt to get free CDs from all the local bands. Kudos!

It's an obvious and transparent tactic to amass more local music for free. Good job and Kudos.

Ha, ha I was thinking the same thing. How fiendishly clever of Starfire.

Hoo-ray! Congratulations, Starfire, and I can't wait for a listen!

Vinyl is more than welcome. Just finished my 2nd night of training. Working on my public radio voice now.

Don't forget to wind those LPs back far enough so that you don't hear the tonal windup.

Good luck Starfire. I look forward to hearing your new show.

Same here, Starfire - sounds like it will be a great show & well-needed - looking forward to listening : )

I'll have to listen to this in LA!

That is great. Finally a spot on KUMD that isn't incredibly late. Cheers Starfire!

KUMD NEEDS TO RID ITSELF OF THE BLUES. I am so damn sick of the shitty white-guy blues. Can it be over yet? I'd rather hear choral music from UMD than the shitty blues.

Zieglerfire

I couldn't agree more with Mevdev's "lose the blues" comment. Too much of anything ruins it. I hardly listen to KUMD because of the blues overload. Local music, world music, and other genres would really brighten up that station.

I doubt that the blues will end anytime soon on KUMD, just like they are not going to stop playing Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, Martin Sexton, The Jayhawks, or some other obscure artists that don't get played on "regular" radio. I, and many others that listen to KUMD, listen to it because of the blues and we donate $$$ to show that we support them playing the blues. But, the next time I pony some of my cash, I will make sure to tell them to play more good black-guy blues.

And that's why we can never have anything nice.

I have long been surprised at how much time on KUMD is devoted to the blues, as if they're under some contract to play a minimun amount each week. A little bit for the blues fans is fine, but it's a pretty limited genre...and there's so much other music out there!

I love the blues. Duluth sucks except for the blues fest. The lake is great for throwing my empty cigarette carton after I've gotten good and leathery in the sun.

See you this summer. I'll bring my little coinpurse so I can give each waitress 10 cents, a quarter if they compliment me on my facelift and my huge goldwing motorcycle.

Sorry. error twice when submitting, still got it.

I also forgot that I also really like rolling down park point and then revving my engine while idling.

Thanks KUMD you keep me KUMming back.

Good luck and I wish you the best!!!!

I agree this is long over due!!!!!

Deborah and I want to wish you the best!!!!!!!!!

It's about time!!!!!

What's that you're saying, Todd, I can't hear you!

I used to volunteer as an announcer/DJ for the KUMD Women's Program on Sundays. I like my blues -- Marcia Ball, Shemekia Copeland, et al. But I also played a lot of French music, esp. Edith Piaf, and Mexican music. I even started getting phone calls when I was on my shift, with requests for Edith Piaf. The reason KUMD plays so much blues is that they must receive lots of comp CDs from blues artists coming to BluesFest, either officially or unofficially. Their blues collection is pretty impressive.

What the hell? Walt Dizzo has been playing local music for the last two years every Thursday on 91.3 KUWS. Stop acting like this is a godsend.

Just another example of why the Superior Scene has more access, bands, and diversity than Duluth.

Oh boy. Radio Perfect Day Duluth on KUMD.

Craig, why can't you just be happy that there are 2 local shows now? Why do you feel the need to create a Duluth/Superior division? We're all on the same team.

Ah yes - access - the tallest tine in the tridents of any respectable music-appreciation arsenal.

Local Casey Kasem's, Ryan Seacrest's and Andrew Olson's unite! Now let us contrast the spatial nuances of our individual chips here on our over-burdened and weary shoulders.

Hone your hateration, you must. In the meantime, please stop saying things.

I'm extremely happy for this show to happen. Congrats Starfire! The MORE local music the better.

Thanks Walt. I'm glad the shows are on at different times. I'll have to have you on the show soon, you can teach me a few things.

I have some questions:

Who is Walt Dizzo and when is it on?

Why do Duluth and Superior fight?

Is there any connection to local Duluth (or Superior) TV from local people? (that I can get online, I don't have a TV)

We all know that Superior has much more grey rundown warehouses than us and frankly we're jealous.

KUWS schedule is sans dizzo:
http://kuws.fm/kuwsprogramschedule.htm

btw. I listen mostly to public radio (100.5 and sometimes kuws and that other one that plays classical music. I only have a radio in my car. I listen to pandora at home.)

Wishing you the best of luck and both of us agree it is a perfect place!!!!

Peace

Wishing you the best of luck and both my wife and I think it is a perfect fit for you!!!!

to mevdev:

My show is part of the "Dean's List" block of music that is on M-Th 10pm-1am on KUWS. I host my show on Thursday nights. I try to play an as eclectic show as possible. I also try to feature some local cuts and live performances.
I have fun with the show. I'm so glad that KUMD is offering community shows. This is totally a good thing.

Burly, pleasae stop. You are way too obvious.

Congrats to Duluth, Superior, Starfire, Craig, TBT, Luce', and me.

Maybe KUMD only plays blues because Zig kept selling all the other CDs and pocketing the money?

Ouch, too true. He did great live shows, but his conduct otherwise was negative for the station. I'm sure the money he made selling cds and LPs wasn't much, but it hurt the station. Half of the recods in the bin at Carlson's had KUMD's stamp on it. Good riddance to Ziegler. I'm glad UMD finally noticed they had a radio station. Now let's see them use it properly.

Let's see a morning show by students with music picked by students and then shows all day. Save the blues for 11-2am. Or 2am-5am.

we all know it's been a rocky few years with KUMD, i hear they have a great new program director and i from what i know of her she's got a progressive vision and a pulse on change. here's to that.
kudos Starfire.

Ms. Dean of KUMD fame is also a really good poker player and a fixture in local bars and at local events.
