Cloud Cult, Animated

I saw this commercial for Esurance on TV tonight. Weird stuff.

Comments

Wow, I have to hand it to esurance, this is certainly an interesting way to advertise. Or, maybe I have to hand it to Cloud Cult... not sure. Who's using who?

I like the animation.

Holy crow!! That is so...baffling & orgasmic all at once! They've got Connie & Scott painting, & Shawn's facial hair! Hahaha. I actually love it. Thank you for posting!

Coolio!

Who's using who? Seems like a fairly even trade.

I think it's a pretty even trade. Esurance seems like a fine company, I might even look into using them when it's time to re-up just to thank them for supporting the arts here. I am so happy for Craig. The first time I saw Cloud Cult was in 2004 just after the first ever fair trade festival at a certain theater downtown. I was shocked even then at how he was coming around after so many dramatic changes in such a short time. Before that I had just known him as a DJ and scenester. Now it looks like he's becoming a bit of a national scenester and it looks good on him.

Hopefully they don't get so big that it's like "freak out" big. But success is good. It's good.

From Cloud Cult newsletter:

From Red Rocks in Colorado to auto insurance that rocks in San Francisco, and from
animation to reforestation, here's a quick glimpse at Cloud Cult's totally awesome
2008.
The year so far, To begin with, we meet a few folks from Esurance last year at the
2007 Monolith Festival and discovered that we actually had a lot in common with
them. (Imagine that, right?) Turns out, Esurance is a really cool company. They're
green and they're into music, so it made perfect sense for us to partner up. Have
we mentioned that their claims vehicles consist of an all hybrid fleet? Why can't
every company operate like this?
They became an official green sponsor of our 27-stop album release tour earlier
this year, offsetting our carbon emissions, printing green tour posters for every
venue, and subsidizing the bio-diesel fuel for the tour van. Very awesome. But things
didn't stop there.
We're now in a commercial! Yup, you can check us out in the most recent Esurance
commercial in which the characters get animated. Better still, "Lucky Today," is
featured prominently in the spot. Working with Wild Brain, the animation studio,
was a great experience and we all agree that it was pretty cool seeing our animated
counterparts in action. Check us out and let us know what you think at [email protected]
!
Coming up, Monolith, round 2! On September 12, we'll be headlining the VIP party
the night before the festival begins. We performed at Monolith last year, but since
they have a policy to not have the same bands each year, they invited us to be part
of the pre-party this year. The organizers of the event are some of the nicest people
we've met, and they really want to make things as environmentally friendly as possible.
And here again, Esurance will be working with them to make the 2008 festival completely
carbon neutral. Again, awesome.

i actually saw a spot on them on the weather channel. yes, i watch the weather channel. it soothes me.
anyhoo, they had a segment on cloud cult and their eco friendly outfit.

Slight problem. This is an auto insurance company. Autos are a huge scourge on the environment. Okay, we all drive, and I'm glad to see Cloud Cult get national exposure, but shouldn't they have held out for a company more relevant to their avowed eco-mission? There's a whiff of greenwashing here and it smells like teen carbon monoxide.

I get so happy for Cloud Cult everytime I see this ad on TV! I've been a fan since 2004...they are the nicest group of musicians you'll ever meet. No big egos, just big hearts. And they do everything they can to be "green," long before it was cool. I'm happy that my favorite band to come out of the Twin Ports is finally getting the recognition they deserve!!

Fargle,

Gotta disagree, and not just cuz I love Cloud Cult and Craig and Connie and all the other things that begin w/ "C".

While they do insure autos, I feel that is slightly beside the point. What if they insured, say, pooper scoopers? The fact would remain that all they are doing is insuring something, not actually creating pollution themselves. In fact, as a company, they are unusually "green". And by sponsoring a Cloud Cult tour (w/ all it's various carbon-reducing efforts), they are ACTUALLY AFFECTING "GREEN-ness", not just green-washing.

Yup.

Oh, and I wanted to add something else...

People are going to insure their cars, either way. Isn't it a positive thing that we have a choice to insure our cars with a company that will support a band like Cloud Cult?

And lastly, your honor, knowing Mr. and Mrs. Minowa, and given their level of commitment to green-ness, I doubt they would allow themselves to be used in a "green-washing way" - I'm sure they thoroughly investigated Esurance before any contracts were signed.

I'm done.

i will likely be switching to esurance solely on the basis of this spot. not that i let anyone make decisions for me, but if craig would put cloud cult's integrity on the line for an insurance company, that speaks a lot to me.
