Critical Mass Friday!

Come ride your bicycle or shake your fist out your car window! A Halloween Critical Mass bike ride is brewing!

Critical Mass (according to Wikipedia) is a bicycling event typically held on the last Friday of every month in over 300 cities around the world. While the ride was originally founded with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the cities can be to bicyclists, the leaderless structure of Critical Mass makes it impossible to assign it any one specific goal. In fact, the purpose of Critical Mass is not formalized beyond the direct action of meeting at a set location and time and traveling as a group through city or town streets.

just remember that bikes have to follow the rules of the road too. i did a critical mass when i first moved to the cities and got so pissed off i left halfway though. i thought it hurt the bike culture more than helped. bikes running stop lights and stop signs, no signaling to turn, talking on a cell phone while riding, flicking off drivers, weaving all over the road, etc.

here's hoping the duluth cm is more helpful and less asshole.

I used to attend Critical Mass (mostly in the winter when there were just five or six of us that showed regularly).

However, I changed my opinion about Critical Mass a year or so ago and stopped attending them. People are already mad at cyclists and I, as a cycle commuter feel no reason to enrage auto-drivers more.

I am not a sometimes-cyclist, I am an everday-for-all-tasks cyclist and I perform my own personal 'Critical Mass' everyday of the year.

So, that being said, feel free to join the crew and ride the streets but remember to refrain from use of the middle finger and anger, obey traffic signals and limit your group to one lane of traffic. Bicyclists are no better than cars and vice versa.

I echo what the previous two said. Having recently come to Minneapolis from Duluth, it's hard enough to be a pedestrian without getting mowed down by oblivious drivers, but there are also so many cyclists that blow through stop signs as well.
