- Frank Galvin
The Verdict

"What we have here, is a failure to communicate." And then, Luke dies. Kind of reminds me blogging. And, for those who think I've misplaced the quote in the movie, it was said twice. first by the colonel or commander or whoever the jerk was, and then at the very end by Luke himself.

"She underlines the fuck scenes for ya? Jesus, if she underlines the fuck scenes for ya, she must worship the ground you walk on."

Reggie Dunlop, Slapshot

But his greatest quotes come from his own mouth, including his assertion that being blacklisted by Nixon was his greatest achievement, and his stance on gay rights:

“I'm a supporter of gay rights. And not a closet supporter either. From the time I was a kid, I have never been able to understand attacks upon the gay community. There are so many qualities that make up a human being... by the time I get through with all the things that I really admire about people, what they do with their private parts is probably so low on the list that it is irrelevant.”

RIP to a great actor, citizen, activist.

“If you're playing a poker game and you look around the table and and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.”

Thanks for that info, udarnik. I hadn't heard that before.

“Are you crazy? The fall will probably kill you.”

An unbelievable career. I thought he was great recently in Empire Falls. He aged so well and now he is gone. However, he will live on forever on film.

“He was smiling... That's right. You know, that, that Luke smile of his. He had it on his face right to the very end. Hell, if they didn't know it 'fore, they could tell right then that they weren't a-gonna beat him. That old Luke smile. Oh, Luke. He was some boy. Cool Hand Luke. Hell, he's a natural-born world-shaker. “

This is a truly sad day. He was a real hollywood rebel. Such a charitable and intelligent activist as well.

I feel his most classic role was Fast Eddie Felson. His funniest, but most unfortunate role, was Reg Dunlop. The obvious ones are Cool Hand Luke and Hud. My favorite Newman film is The Sting.
