listening to dylan ...

in 2000 i was seriously dating a guy and heard the song "it ain't me, babe" sung by joan biaz and it totally resonanted with me and i knew that my boyfriend and i -- although we liked each other -- would break up eventually. our plan was to, instead of verbally breaking up, send this song to the other in the mail when we'd determined it was over.

so ... what's your favorite bob dylan break up song?

Comments

I'd have to say my favorite Dylan breakup song is "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright."

Positively 4th Street. The whole thing is awesome, and then wraps up with "Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes. Then you'd know what a drag it is to see you."

Sit down, sucka!

Oh man, I remember listening to "Don't Think Twice" over and over again in 1989 after a break up. "Goodbye is too good a word, babe, so I'll just say 'fare thee well.'"

Depending on how amicable the split... Idiot Wind.

"We're idiots, babe / It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves."

I have never used Dylan to get through a relationship break up but I this is my work break up song. Things Have Changed.
You can tell when I am really fried because I will be singing this.

you're a big girl now.

I'm not sure about a break-up song but I got my best relationship advice from Bob Dylan, "when something's not right it's wrong" (I can't remember which song that's from maybe "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go? I really did dump my psychotic ex after hearing that, and it was a long time coming.

There is a Dylan song for almost every situation. I'd have to say, "It Ain't Me" or "Don't Think Twice" for break-ups. I suppose it depends on the person though.

How about "Honest with Me"?

leopard skin pill box hat.

Tie between "Positively 4th Street" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright."

Lots of good ones, though.

"I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)"

Lay Lady Lay.

Is Idiot Wind about Edie Sedgewick? Or some other idiot?

Something a little newer, although the old suggestions are great. I would pick "Love Sick" off of Time Out of Mind. I have a vague memory of lying in the dark listening to that CD over and over and cursing those devil women.

Most Dylanologists say that "Idiot Wind" was referencing his ex-wife Sara. I think Blood on the Tracks was around the end of their marriage.

I ain't gonna work on Maggies' Farm no more had a particularly poignant meaning for me after having ended a relationship with a girl named Maggie.

okay, that didn't come out quite like I wanted it...

it's Maggie's Farm.

I know.

Though I did once tell a girl not to go away mad, but to just go away.

Most Likely You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Mine)
2007

I've never heard the real Dylan version, but "Quit Your Low-down Ways" (by Giljunko on the Duluth Does Dylan, Vol. 1 disc resonated with me at the time.

I reckon that Dylan's just good like that. Maybe all of his stuff is both hook-up and break-up songs.

"Standing in the Doorway" off of Time Out of Mind. "Don't know if I saw you/if I would kiss you or kill you..." Damn I love that song.

The title alone of Dylan's LOVE IS JUST A FOUR-LETTER WORD has a nice "piss off" ring to it.

She's Your Lover Now

mamma you've been on my mind and ballad in plan d.

i hate myself for loving you off the planet waves album.

Boots of Spanish Leather.
This song is a heartfelt plea for the other to stay, but in the end when it is clear they are gone, just bring me back a pair of boots of spanish leather. When Dylan was asked by Studs Terkel if he wrote the song because of a lost love, he said "no, i just always wanted a pair of boots made of spanish leather"...
