Thanks to Paul Lundgren who clued me onto the DNT story. Here it is:

Midnight Sun Adventure Co., an outdoor retail store on the Lakewalk in Canal Park, is closing.
According to the company’s Web site, the store is open until Dec. 16 or until the inventory is sold.
Co-owner Siiri Morse referred questions to Duluth attorney Joseph Ferguson, but Ferguson did not respond to several calls from the News Tribune.

Going out of business
The Web site announces a going out of business sale and thanks customers for their patronage.
Located in the former Endion Station in Canal Park, the store was opened in 2005 by five accomplished local athletes —cross-country racers Siiri and Peder Morse and biathletes Cory, Kara and Chad Salmela.
According to the Midnight Sun Web site, the store will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays until it closes.

They did go out of business, unfortunately. However, all of the nordic ski equipment and some of the staff went over to Continental Ski & Bike on First Avenue.

being referred to a lawyer over such an innocuous question is a little eyebrow raising Wonder what happened?

There is nothing mysterious going on, unfortunately they just went out of business. I work at Continental Ski and, as fonix said, Andre, Jason, and Bjorn are now working over here and we have brought all of their nordic skis/boots over as well.
Siiri and Kara will still be organizing some events, such as Chicks on Sticks. These events will be somewhat affiliated with Continental now, I believe.

I heard about this two weeks ago, and they were already clearancing their remaining gear and clothing. Not much was left even two weeks ago. Sorry to see them go, because they filled a niche, for sure!

Will Continental redeem unused Midnight Sun gift certificates, or should I just eat them?

I wonder what will happen to the building...?

funkenschutz: I'm not sure about the gift certificates, but swing on through the shop and talk to Brett...I'm sure they can work something out! :)

Tomasz: "I wonder what will happen to the building...?"
1. Hardees?
2. Ringsred will buy it and destroy all hope of positive economic/cultural revival?
3. Starfire Lounge?

More on what Brett mentioned above- nothing out of the ordinary for small start-ups: a couple of bad winters that hurt seasonal sales (timing is everything!), low cash flow and changes in direction (funny how kids can refocus where you want to go and what you want to do with your time). Running a small store takes a ton of time and effort. Too bad it didn't work out.
(Ferguson does bankruptcy work for Johnson Killen so that might give you an idea on what they are doing to wind down the business. The registration info with the MN Sec of State lists "Midnight Sun Adventure Company" as a corporation)

Thought something was up when I got an email from Continental saying the Nordic stuff went there. Too bad! I really liked those guys! Gotta buttload of those Caribou stickers and the Grand Traverse T-shirt for momentos though!
