I buy organic farm fresh eggs from my neighbor (75 cents/dozen). They are the best and I will never eat commercial eggs again.
Friends in Winona raise chickens for eggs in town and only keep hens. Roosters are obnoxious in the morning. Perhaps Duluth could allow hens only ?
I would rather hear chickens than car alarms

When I was 10 or 11 I used to sometimes get the job of chopping the heads off. I wasn't a very good aim and sometimes I would cut the darned head almost in two. If you lay them over the chopping block just right and move the chicken just right they lay that old neck out for ya. Then you would simply toss the chicken and they would jump around for quite a while. Sometimes when you got going faster you could have more than one jumping around at a time without their head. By the time you were done it could look like quite a bloody mess all over the yard. People today don't even know what a real chicken tastes like. ahhh the childhood memories.

I truly love that there's an underground chicken subculture.

My neighbor, in the very heart of Duluth, acquired chickens and bees last fall. He said that when he asked the city about permits, he was told that no such category existed. "Good luck," said the city, adding that if anyone complained, he would probably have to get rid of them.
As far as I know, the chickens have not yet begun to lay eggs.

If people get to raise chickens, I want a pony.

my partner's father has chickens (got 'em last spring), and he keeps hens only because of the annoyingly loud nature of roosters. the eggs are soooo good. you should see his chicken coop-- they've got a big picture window, driftwood handles on the doors... and i think he's putting up Christmas lights this year.
(just so he doesn't get busted--i don't think they're technically in the Duluth city limits.)
here's a bunch of pics.
