Poets Go to Work Saturday Evening at Labor Temple

Folks, there is going to be an amazing event taking place Saturday evening at the Labor Temple, 2002 London Road, that you are going to want to catch. It's called "Poets Go To Work," and its a group reading by some of the area's finest poets, organized by Duluth Poet Laureate Barton Sutter. Bart Sutter will read, and so will Ellie Schoenfeld, Sheila Packa, Don Dass, and Jim Johnson. Local musician Jim Hall will provide music. And Larry Sillanpa, editor of Labor World, is providing an amazing spread -- food, wine, bear, coffee, cider. It's going to be a celebration! It all starts at 7:30 pm Saturday night. And it's free, co-sponsored by Lake Superior Writers, Labor World, and the Central Body of the Duluth AFL-CIO.

Last year's group reading, at the Lafayette Sq. Community Center on Park Pt. was a blast, and lasted all night, it was a cool group of poets reading their work and the work of other poets they admired. Good crowd, good vibes, Duluth has a lot to be proud of in terms of the quality of writers living here, sharing their art with us.

Damn -- I'm going to miss the opportunity to eat bear.

Like you missed the opportunity to see the Black-eyed Snakes at the Brewhouse last night… sucka!

Yeah, but I'm coming to see BES, Keepaways, Crew Jones, and GILJUNKO on Halloween at Luce. So it's all good ...

How did Barton Sutter get named poet laureate? Who picks that?

I wish Larry Sillanpa was reading something. He's got a great voice.

Bart applied to be Duluth's first poet laureate, which came with a $2000 honorarium, when the Lake Superior Writers and a bunch of co-sponsoring literary and arts organizations started it going after Gov Pawlenty vetoed having a state poet laureate, and in fact, mocked the whole notion of having a poet laureate at all. Bart's term is up at the end of the year, there will be a call for applications for the next poet laureate. I hope Paul Lundgren applies, he'd be so cool, he's a great poet. Nice voice too.

Wow, this was an AMAZING event, last night, and the 120 people who attended certainly heard some amazong poetry from some very cool people, who both read their own work, as well as the work of other poets from the region. Larry Sillanpa, he of the Finn-inflected amazing voice, introduced Barton Sutter, but did not read any poetry himself. His wife, however, told me he indeed has written some poems, but they are hidden. Too bad.
