As someone who was born at St. Mary’s in Duluth but grew up mostly in Superior, I’ve often wondered why anyone would want to live on the side of a huge rock. Sure the view from the hill is nice, but so is the view of the hill. I mean you people can’t play sports without worrying about chasing the ball 2 miles down the hill into the lake if you miss it. And there’s the driving in winter thing. Anyways I am wondering what the steepest streets in Duluth are. Here’s a few to get started with, at 4thAve.E.&1st St. and 26th Ave.E.&Superior St.:

I grew up in Morley Heights (uh, sorta middle Woodland area, for the uninitiated), and we always had a good time blasting down Park Street on Radio Flyers (sans helmets, of course — this was the 80s). I think it's steeper than 26th E., but that could be the memory of a child speaking.

oh, and 5th ave. w. above w. 5th st. my station wagon caught air there a few times (and then i prayed the car would stop on the steep gravelly road before sliding out into mesabe ave.). the road to the antenna farm is steep, too, but it's not a real road.

The Star Tribune ran an article about Duluth in the travel section a few years back and had this photo of what I believe it claimed to be Duluth's steepest street. But now I've gone and forgotten just what street that is and I'm too lazy to hunt through archives. Anyone recognize it?

The photo in the Star Tribune article was taken at 5th Ave. W., which is the steepest street. Here's a two more of the same location.

I'd rather chase my ball, than have it stolen by some Chooch Town dirtball.

Minneapolis Ave. is pretty fucking steep at the top.
A friend of mine wiped out and almost broke his neck trying to ride a BMX down it when we were kids.

time to get out the geometry tools and go find out. Yeah Mn ave is pretty steep (I live about 2 blocks from it), and some of those streets just West of Mesabi are good contenders.

It's not the steepest but Stroll Ave going upward from Central Entrance right next to Dairy Queen pretty darn steep. When I was a kid we usually walked out bikes down that street out of fear our brakes would fail at the bottom and we'd be trampled by the speeding cars below.

5th Avenue West, between 4th and 6th streets.
Minneapolis Avenue.
2nd Avenue East, between 6th and 7th Streets.
All the deadend streets east of Old Piedmont are steep. Check out the 19th Avenue West connector between Old Piedmont and West 4th Street, or 7th Street above Old Piedmont.
New Street, above 18th Avenue West.
Lyons Street, east of Mississippi Avenue.
Missouri Avenue.
Chambersburg Avenue, between Leonard Street and Erickson Street.
28th Avenue West, above 15th Street.

I'd imagine that any street in the Goat Hill neighborhood would have to contend. If I was a bettin' man (and I'm not) I'd wager that that Strib photo was taken there.

The Polar Bear organized a complete bicycle tour of Duluth's uphills (from out by Mont du Lac to like Lakeview) and there was one that particularly broke my heart -- I think it's Exhibition Drive, at the top of N. 28th Ave. W. above W. 15th St. Comes out on the road you take to get to Piedmont Trails.

The half-a-block above my house on 13th Ave E. between 6th and 7th is pretty darn steep as well, although not as impossibly steep as 5th W.
