The release of LSD on the Haight was...or could be considered conspiratous in nature...but then again, guys like Owsley and Leary, and the Pranksters were into it long before...Kesey himself was exposed to it while in the Army, so it seems a natural progression to bring it to the masses via the Pranksters and the acid tests...but this would mean that Kesey, Owsley, Leary and the rest were all in cahoots with the government...By the 1960's Hoffman's research on Ergot had to be quite well known to pretty much everyone.

Huh...I've always heard that Kesey got experimented on while he was in the Army, and that those experiments were some of the basis and inspiration for One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest. That info, I believe, was well documented in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Koolaid Acid Test. But at the same time that the Kesey Pranksters were doing their thing, Leary and his contemporaries were doing their pseudo-intellectualism thing. The two didn't really hang out all that much. I think they were on two completely different levels.

And then there was Owsley...who produced most of what was being distributed...i've had some of what was purported to be either some of his original stock (which I doubt, given the degradation of the psychoactive properties of LSD over time) or a batch made from Owsley's original recipe. Not bad...if his recipe's G.I., then that's one thing the Government got right.

I found the reference for Kesey, book is called "CIA: Secrets of the Company" by Mick Farren. It says Kesey got it first as a volunteer in a Veteran's hospital, which was allowing the CIA's MKULTRA program to dose volunteers. From there it says there is speculation that Owsley got a jump start from the CIA, although this has never been proved.

Re: Gary Powers' U-2 getting shot down over Russia, the theory is that former U-2 radar man Lee Harvey Oswald, who had 'defected' to Russia at that time, told the Soviets how to shoot it down as a way of embarrassing Eisenhower into backing away from closer relations with Russia (the crash scuttled a planned conference). Oswald promptly un-defected with his new wife, who was the daughter of a KGB agent, and the rest is history.
