Captain, I'm having trouble getting a signal...
[Edit: I've made this list into a wiki that can be added to or edited by anyone.]

So, I was looking at on-line lists of wifi hotspots for Duluth and my considered opinion is that they suck. Let's compile our own list, shall we? Here are my criteria: It must be free and fairly consistent.
Amazing Grace Cafe and Bakery
Beaners Central
Bixby's Cafe
Caribou Coffee - Canal Park
Carmody's - Superior St
Chester Creek Cafe - 8th Street and 19th Ave
Continental Ski and Bike
DAC Deli - Tech Village
Duluth Children's Museum - Depot
Duluth Curling Club
Dunn Bros.
Erbert & Gerbert's - 1st St
Fitger's Brewhouse
Grandma's Great American Bar & Grill
Jitters - Superior St
Lakeview Coffee House
Quizno's - 4th St and Miller Trunk Highway
Red Mug - Superior
Sir Benedict's
Taco John's - London Road
Whole Foods Coop - 4th St & 6th Ave
[Update: I am updating this list as locations are added in the comments below.

DAC Deli in the Tech Village
Erbert & Gerberts downtown (Not actually E&G's but there's a signal from somewhere there)
Jitters
Outside my house (haven't figured out the password thing yet)

and taco john's? really?
that's, for some reason, amusing to me.

Yep, just discovered that tonight. It's what prompted me to make the list.

sir benedict's, on 8th e & superior... although it's quite difficult to use their internet and not end up surfing the web drunk.

Red Mug in Superior
Quizno's in the West End and on Fourth Street
I'm assuming these should all be FREE wi-fi sites?

the coffee express joint across from Beaner's out West has it...
doesn't Beaner's have wifi?

Netstumbler is a good wardriving tool. Two years ago a couple of HCIS students walked up and down sup st. with a laptop and this program. They found many open APs.

The Duluth Curling Club has free wifi, I think sponsored by clearwire.

Why the hell do some places like Starbucks feel like they can charge for their Wi-fi? This drives me nuts! It only seems to happen in corporate joints. Little local Mom and Pops rarely charge.

Oh, I forgot to add - Whole Foods Coop on 4th Street.
And, yes, FREE ONLY... see criteria above.
I'm going to rewrite the post to incorporate suggestions given in the comments to make a handy guide.

Mcdonalds advertises free Wi-Fi at least the one on the hill and the one on londen road.We don't eat there so don't know how good it is.Beaners has my vote,i have never had a problem there,Amazing Grace Cafe and Bakery is pretty gosh darn good too

Can anyone confirm McDonald's wifi? I was at the Jiffy Lube across the street from McD's and saw the network but could not log into it.

Bixby's Bagels up by UMD has free Clearwire. I wonder if Bulldog Pizza does as well.
Here's a gripe about UMD. They have wifi, but only if you have a username and password. Give me a freakin' break! I would expect more from a PUBLIC university.

American Bar & Grill at the Miller Hill mall

Duluth Childrens Museum... The Depot on Michigan Street

Continental Ski and Bike...The Coffee Shop inside the store is under construction right now. Free wi-fi is up and running, there's just not much room to sit until the construction is done.

I believe all the Quizno's (superior and west end) locations have wifi, not just the downtown one.

Didnt the city claim to have free wi-fi for all of canal park and some of superior st? I've been down there and think I see the signal but can't connect. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Posted by: Bully | December 23, 2006 07:25 AM
I see the signal in canal park sometimes. When chipnet at Amazing Grace is down I can sometimes get on the city network, but it is weak and unreliable from what I have found.

Jt's bar and grill

Weirdly enough, the Dee Independent laundrymat boasts free wifi. I haven't checked it out, so I don't know if it is reliable.

I realize this may never get read, as this is an older post, but as I suspected and have recently confirmed, Chester Creek Cafe/At Sarah's Table is a wi-fi spot. Right nice pie, too.

The new Sheraton hotel on 3rd Avenue and East Superior Street:
ethostream network
I just tested it from a 2nd floor room and got 2 Mbps down and almost 400 Kbps up.
I haven't checked the lounge for connectivity, but I'm sure it's there.

Quiznos in Superior has a nice signal.
UWS, unfortunately, is the same as UMD- you must have a username and password.
Big Apple Bagels in Superior is good as well.
