You don't have to be a genius...

startrek_poker.jpgFriday night (November 24) I'm hosting a small stakes (nickel ante) poker get together at 8 p.m. It's dealer's choice and silly games made up on the spot are welcome. This is not your Texas Hold 'em pressure cooker variation. This is friendly neighborhood poker. Floosies, malingerers, and kabitzers are welcome as well.

Bring your buy in money (5 or 6 bucks should do it), some beverages, snacks, and a hankering for fun.

If you are interested, contact me and I'll give you details.

My favorite local variation was invented by my friend, Karl. It's called Russian Roulette. It's a simple seven card stud blind variant in which the first player turns over a card to start, he or she then has the highest hand showing. There is a round of betting. The next player then turns over cards until her or she has the highest hand showing, and another round of betting, and so on.

The kicker is this. If anyone turns over the ace of spades, they have to drop out of the game and match whatever is in the pot. It lends to some wonderfully tense play.

The only other action card is the queen of hearts, the lady of mercy. If she is turned over first, the player who turned her over is protected from the bullet (the ace of spades).

If it's anything like data's game sounds great, except for newton being a sore loser and stephen hawking winning all the time..
