Wow. Now this is weird I want to destroy both Starfire and starwars. What am I saying.

Administration Researches Laser Weapon

"The White House wants us to do space defense," said a senior Pentagon official who oversees many space programs, including the laser effort. "We need that ability to protect our assets" in orbit.

Does this look familiar?

What I want to know: Starfire are you a "weapon-class beam director." ?

PDD Blog Round Up

Feel free to post your own links.

PEZheads: The Movie

*THIS IS THE OFFICIAL TRAILER (the other one posted has sentimental value because I've been watching it for the last 6 months)

I’ve been tracking the progress of this movie for a while, and it’s finally finished and being sent to homes around the world. Not my home yet, as I’m trying to come up with the money for the complete merch set of stuff. When I do get the film, would there be any interest in having a showing of this at the Playground or any other venue I might be able to set-up?

Human rights ordinance

You probably saw the article in the DNT today about Mayor Bergson and his plans to eliminate the Human Rights Office and Ordinance. Herb's budget for next year has deemed that the city doesn't really need to be bothered by such trivial things, yet I guess they can find money to expand the lakewalk past those damn condos at the bottom of 21st ave E. and the city may well help out with a million and a half in tax-increment financing to good old A&L to "revitalize" the block accross from the gacktacular SoftCenter.

Herb has been a bit snippy in his email responses to this issue, here is his email address [email protected]. And here is the list with the city council members contact info

It is early in the budget process, but if you are at all inclined, I urge you to contact these folks and let them know your thoughts. Even better, show up for the theatre that is the City Council meetin' (Monday 7pm), show up early sign up, say your peice. The council members where a bit...befuddled at the last meeting so the more people that hammer home the need for this the better.

So this frog walks into a bank and inquires about borrowing some money. The receptionist directs the frog to have a seat and wait until someone can help him. Pretty soon one of the loan officers, Patty Wack, comes out and greets the frog and leads him to her office. "So I understand you are interested in taking out a loan from us," Patty says. The frog nods in agreement. "Do you have any collateral?" Patty asks. The frog again nods in agreement and produces a mysterious object. Patty takes the object from him and examines it. She can't quite figure out what it is, although it looks somehow valuable if not a bit gaudy. "Excuse me a moment," she says. She calls the Bank President and summons him to her office. She explains her plight: "Mr. Frog here came in seeking a loan and wants to use this object for collateral, but I'm not sure how valuable it is or if we can accept it." The Bank President looks at the object, sniffs, and exclaims quite loudly, "It's a knick-knack, Patty Wack, give the frog a loan!"

Alcatraz Kid

There are lots and lots of good shows to attend this Saturday night all the way up and down Superior St. from Quinlans to the Brewhouse. Stop in to the Red Lion around 10:00 to catch a set from my friend Jeremy. He plays a sweet kind of folk/pop/electronica that we don't get to hear too often. If you get a chance, check out the article about him in last week's City Pages.

[Video] Diebold AccuVote-TS Voting Machine Crack

diebold.jpg

Abstract: This paper presents a fully independent security study of a Diebold AccuVote-TS voting machine, including its hardware and software. We obtained the machine from a private party. Analysis of the machine, in light of real election procedures, shows that it is vulnerable to extremely serious attacks. For example, an attacker who gets physical access to a machine or its removable memory card for as little as one minute could install malicious code; malicious code on a machine could steal votes undetectably, modifying all records, logs, and counters to be consistent with the fraudulent vote count it creates. An attacker could also create malicious code that spreads automatically and silently from machine to machine during normal election activities — a voting-machine virus. We have constructed working demonstrations of these attacks in our lab. Mitigating these threats will require changes to the voting machine's hardware and software and the adoption of more rigorous election procedures.

Father Mulcahy
Piggly Wiggly
Fruit of the Loom

Many years ago, I was in the middle of a dental procedure, with a bunch of contraptions jammed into my mouth, and for some reason the words "Piggly Wiggly" entered my brain. I couldn't stop laughing. Needless to say, my dentist was unhappy about this.

The day after.

It amazes me that with all the people who contribute to PDD, that NOBODY recognized, or cared enough, to note the passing of one of the saddest anniversaries in the US.

I still feel angry that this happened. I am DISGUSTED with GW's handling of the situation. As far as I know, Bin Laden isn't hiding in downtown Baghdad.

Whether or not you agree with US policy, I'm sure we can all agree that nobody who passed on that horrible day deserved what happened to them, nor did their families.

Sad.

Tell me please

Can anyone tell me who submitted the black and white banner consisting of 3 pictures of the pier and lighthouse being pummeled by an oncoming wave? Fantastic photos! I would love to purchase copies if available.
The photos show the beauty and extraordinary power the big lake holds.
BTW - I love all the banner photos, keep 'em coming.

Franken on Letterman

So last night, Al Franken was on Letterman, and Dave told (on Al's behalf) a Buddy Hackett joke which apparently is also told in some new documentary. Because the joke was risque (I guess), they bleeped out the punchline. I highly doubt that a documentary about Al Franken will be playing in Colorado, so ... somebody please fill in the blanks.

(And, by the way, anyone want to start a pool on when the "Duluth Answer Man" ads will begin surfacing on TV once Franken decides he will run for senate?)

So, so WRONG

So in a move of brilliance (insert sarcasm here) I am dj'ing my own wedding. Brilliant! And said wedding is a week from today so I am devoting today to pulling all the songs for the wedding and loading them onto the IPOD and burning them on to CD. I am a little light on inspiration for some areas of the festivities so I turned to Wed Alert to help me out. They were very useful for coming up with the song list for the bagpipe guy for the ceremony so I thought I would check out their selections for the Father/Daughter dance. It was your usual schlock-Butterfly Kisses, Thank Heaven for Little Girls, Wind Beneath My Wings etc. Then came this..The Cure-Lullabye. I am sorry, but isn't this song about a child molester coming in and well, molesting little Robert Smith at night?

"...quietly he laughs and shaking his head creeps closer now closer to the foot of the bed and softer than shadow and quicker than flies his arms are all around me and his tongue in my eyes 'be still be calm be quiet now my precious boy don't struggle like that or i will only love you more for it's much too late to get away or turn on the light the spiderman is having you for dinner tonight."

What kind of F*CKED UP Daddy Daughter dance is that?

PS-If anyone has a sound system we could rent please let me know!

my brother has found some interesting subjects down in minneapolis.

mark your calendars, duluth

This isn't for two weeks, but it's important that everyone come, and I'm excited, so I'm posting now.

The legendary RANK STRANGERS from Minneapolis will be playing with some special guests to be announced at The Red Lion on Friday, Sept 15 at 10PM (I think). Two dollar cover! One dollar beer! What more could you possibly want from your friday night?

They're an amazing live band, and their last show in Duluth drew about five people. That's why it's important that everyone come this time.

I'll remind you about this again before the show, don't you worry.

Booking RT's

Hey music lovers.

I've been hearing about a few shows, er, showing up at RT's here in Duluth. What gives? Are they going back to having live music? Some of the best shows ever have been held at RT's, and I know a lot of fellow musicians who are dying to get back in there.

So what gives? Who should I talk to about setting something up? Who else wants to play there? What can we do to get the local music scene back into shape?
