Parkin' It

It's LP's Spring Break and the beauty of being unemployed is that we get to enjoy it together. Of course, the downfall of being unemployed is that we don't have any money to do anything. So we're "pakin' it"

We aim to hit seven parks in the next week. So far, we have hit two: Lincoln (yesterday) and Lester (today).

Instead of us deciding where to go the rest of the week, we thought it would be fun to get your recommendations since many of you have no problem telling people where to go.

We’ll go anywhere in the Twin Ports area and like places with playgrounds and/or hiking trails. We also bring along a bag of outdoor games (badminton, Frisbee, weird velcro handball game, and bubbles), so an open space to play would be good. And hey, if you have some free time, join us!

So, where should we go tomorrow?

the empty field in front of "Old Main" on about 23rd avenue east and fifth street. great place to fly a kite.

Nick, Ady and I have been hiking the end of Park Point a lot lately. Park by the airport and take the trailuntil the fence ends. Then hike along the Bay side, it is really nice and usually a bit warmer.

Head up to Enger and ring the peace bell... that's usually pretty cool! :)

Try Billings Park in Superior. There's playground equipment and all kinds of odd stuff including a tiny bridge to a tiny island. Also, the swings are really cool.

The middle of I-35 is a great place to send a kid to play! No actually if its not too windy, Barker's Island is a fun place for kids.

the lakewalk and Leif Ericson are still good spots until the touristas arrive and take over with their rented two-lane-wide-pedal cars.

There's also a great spot out in Lakeside that's pretty much used by local Lakesidians. Turn right at 42nd Ave E. and park at the turn on the dirt road. Walk a little trail to the lake, and you're sure to find agates. Tamara and I found a bunch out there last summer.

The hike up Chester from the old co-op (4th) to Chester Bowl is a favorite, and the playground at chester bowl is pretty good once you get up there.

Tischer Creek is also a pretty hike, although the trail kind-of ends, and I don't think you're actually supposed to be there down towards the bottom.

Has anyone hiked to the end of chester?

I tried once and ended up really far uprived, but it came to a Y and we couldn't decide what was chester and what was just a tributary creek.

I do remember that hike being very interesting.

Otherwise I highly recommend going to the Baptism river, just up the shore, take a right at tettegouch and park in the lot, then walk down by the state park building under 61 and keep hiking until you get to a huge waterfall. Then climb/clamber/walk up the hill adjacent to that waterfall and marvel at the beauty.

Thanks everybody! Now I have to figure out where to go first. We'll do Billings Park tomorrow because we'll be in sup town midafternoon. Clumsy, I was thinking the same route to Chester Bowl, so that's going on our list. And I want to do the Baptism river route, oh, and I think we need to fly a kite.......

There's a bell we can ring at Enger Tower? Tamara, please tell more....

The Japanese Peace Bell. It's lovely! You and LP will get a quick out of it. It's on the far end of the garden from the parking lot. By the way, the gazebo on the lake side of the park is a great place for a sack lunch.

the hike from my house to the bedrock is facinating. but you can't peer into yoshika's. god damn curtains.

if you see 2 kungfu monks on the chester loop, one middle aged with grey hair and one 20mo.s old and a sarcastic laugh...it's me and lydia...been known to associate with two border collies. I hope the ice and dogdoo are gone.

If you're thinking of heading out of Duluth, try the Split Rock River loop - you get on it right before the state park at the bridge there. It's a 6 mile hike with some challenging terrain, but not too bad.

Otherwise, Tettegouche has some great trails - in.dog and I hiked one this winter and it was a really nice easy walk with some nice waterfall views. It'd be perfect for little legs - I know, because we hiked it when I was six months pregnant and just starting to be huge. (Now I'm 8 months and even bigger!) It's about a 3.5 mile hike round trip.

Ironic1 answered your question about the peace bell, so I hope you have a really great time!

Hey, if you want, you can hike to our house one day and I'll feed you lunch, if you don't mind the fact that we're still unpacking! :)

IMO...any section of the Superior Hiking Trail is awesome for a day hike.

I've backpacked several sections of it already, but you needn't get that crazy to enjoy the trails...I have an extra copy of the Guide to the Superior Hiking Trail if you'd like to borrow it. I think it's even got some notes in the margins.

Hey - not really on the topic of hiking or anything, but I just found this site, and you *totally* need to see it! So stay inside and play on your computer (at least for a few minutes).
