Now, Run the Gauntlet

Check it out, fools! Remember back in the old days when we used that cheesy third-party comment system whose one cool function was that it displayed the name of the most recent commenter on the main page? Well, I received an email this morning requesting that we bring that sort of thing back. Hmmm, I thought. I bet there's a way to do it.

After combing the web for far too long, I found that there's nothing out there about how to do such a thing. The MT community is big on listing recent comments in the sidebar, which I think is clunky because sometimes people make really long titles, and that throws everything off.

But still ... I knew there was a way to do it. I focused all my brain power on this problem, and behold! Hopefully, this will make it easier to keep track of whether a thread you've been following has been updated.

If you're a real geek or a Movable Type user, check the extended entry for the method.

How to place "recent comment" info under individual posts on the main index, using Movable Type

First, you will need to download and install the Compare Plugin on your server.

Then, put the following code in your Main Index template, where the Entry Footer is located.

mtcommentcode.png

The first block of code is the display for "0 comments." The second block is for "1 comment," and contains two tags that display the name (and URL link) of the most recent commenter. The third block of code is exactly the same as the second block, modified for more than one comment.

The entire thing is encased between the MTIfCommentsActive tags, which turn this function on only if comments are allowed on that particular post.

The guantlet has been run! As of this date and time! Gosh, I'm an idiot.

I don't rock. Whoever made the banner of the "Chloe" ship rocks.

Gauntlet Run! Woo hoo!

Gaunlet? Easy. Gaunlet in haiku? Yes, that's a challenge to you, Tomasz and St. G, if you dare.

I like the "who post last" addition. Thanks, Barrett

Seriously: If you click "post" more than once, you're going to end up looking really stupid.

If you don't see your comment after it's published, try refreshing your browser.
