Exit Wound in a Foreign Nation
I was fooling around with some Google Map Mashups and found this one which answers the age old question, "If I start digging straight down and through the earth, where would I end up?" or, as They Might Be Giants would more provocatively invite us to do, "make a hole with a gun perpendicular to the name of this town in a desk-top globe."
Unfortunately, when I dug my hole underneath the Aerial Lift Bridge, I ended up in the Indian Ocean. So much for digging to China. I knew I should have made that left turn at Albuquerque.
Oh, in case you were wondering, to dig to China you have to be somewhere in South America.

I wonder where we would come out if we dug straight across the globe instead of through the core. Humm seems like that might be a easy question to answer on second thought. Lat/Long

aaand the answer appears to be somewhere in Western Mongolia if you dig through the Northern Hemisphere, and somewhere just off the coast of Chile If you dig through the Western

...this is all true but you are assuming that we are all going to be skilled and/or lucky enough to dig a straight path. = >

Is there a BAC setting? Because undoubtedly my path would drift to the left. Eventually I'd end up in Jamaica.

Oh, and for those TMBG fans who got the Ana Ng reference, if you dug from Brooklyn, home of the Johns, you would also end up in the Indian Ocean. To end up in Vietnam you need to start in Peru.

I wonder where you'd need to start digging to wind up in Istanbul (not Constantinople)...

Well, somewhere in the South Pacific, it appears.
